I would also guess that it's the most reliable US sega cd system

I would say is more of a hit and miss. I got a unit for ~$80 from a gamexchange and works great. Then got another one from an ebay seller for ~double that. That unit needs to be warmed up before it works reliably.

Gaming since 1985

I had an Android Assault that would not play in my CDX, but worked fine in other Sega CD's. A buddy of mine swapped discs with me and that copy works. Weird...maybe just a issue with the disc, but no visible scratches. No other carts or discs had issue BUT my old cart adaptor will not play imports on the CDX but I think that is becasue it's a newer build system and has some lockout.

Love my CDX. Ive seen some go for under 90 on ebay. Check your local thrift stores. A friend of mine found one mixed in with old junky cd players. I also found a CDI that way too mixed in with the VCR's.
Awesome trades and deals with:

I was also lucky to find mine at a thrift store for $10.  Unfortunately it didn't come with the original power adapter.

Most of you probably know this, but make sure that you are using the original power adapter(or equivalent specs) with the CDX.  A Genesis power adapter will work, but in the long run, will damage the CDX since the amperage is considerably less.

Only problem that I've come across with my CDX is that it doesn't seem to play my copy of Silpheed well and will freeze after the first level.  The disc is near perfect and it will play fine in a Sega CD model 1.

This aftermarket AC adapter works for both CDX and X'EYE systems:

No worries, my friend and I did a permanent disc swap so we both get our Bari-on :)

Always wanted one, but they're always too expensive when I find one.

The CDX is a pretty solid unit with very good audio, but if you're looking for a lower priced entry point you might be better off with just a Genesis and Model 2 Sega CD.  I normally see a CDX going around $100 or more, there's someone local to me who has one for sale at $125 but I've already got a working one.

I would say your best bet is to try and get one with a lot of games.  I picked up mine for about $100 with 15 games several years ago, but prices have risen since then.
