Famicom Bonk = Horrible
« Reply #15 on: June 24, 2006, 09:52:29 AM »
I don't know that it's that horrible, but I believe that a number of sub-levels were cut due to memory limitations, making it a smaller game.

I guess it'd be cool to play if you wanted to play a Bonk game and had no access to a TG-16 or an emulator, but if you played the TG-16 version, the only reason to touch this one would be out of curiosity.

Someone mentioned PC Engine Sega ports earlier, Shinobi is a great port but the sad part is that is missing a stage.

unfortunately, all the special-"shuriken"-stages are missing :(

The PCE did get a bunch of Sega(arcade) ports, even if most weren't great ports.

in matter of fact, most of the PCE ports are much more great than the original sega MD pendant! especially afterburner II & Out run. but on the other hand, the MD versions of altered beast and golden axe are still "untouchabled"!

I quite like the Sega arcade ports on our beloved PCE. My favorites are Thunder Blade, After Burner II, Space Harrier, Power Drift, and Outrun.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Space Harrier is my favorite of the lot. I spent a billion hours with that game, and I'm still not sick of it, unlike most games that I've played too much.

PCE Space Harrier retains a lot of magic... including the music, sound effects, etc.

You know, the single major reason I even bought my Turbo Express is because of the Sega arcade ports.  I have a Game Gear with Master Gear converter (lets you play Master system carts) and the SMS versions of Shinobi, Space Harrier, and Outrun (couldn't stand SMS Afterburner) were some of my most played portable games, even though I have a DS with tons of stuff on it too.

The Sega ports, although not 100% arcade perfect, were the best of their time and make for some of the best portable fun there is.  I personally find it hilarious that no Sega system had better ports until the 32-bit systems arrived.

As a side note-I FINALLY beat Shinobi (PCE version) for the first time today! *ninja backflip!*  I had beaten the SMS version before, but it's not really the same game, and I'd never gotten close in the arcade.

*edit* I think this thread has been officially hijacked, I forgot that it was originally about the Famicom Bonk  :D

I am quite fond of the PCE Sega arcade ports actually. I thought it did a really great job on After Burner II, a good job on Out Run, Thunder Blade, Columns, and I though they even did a good job on porting Space Harrier, though some may disagree. All the other ports I didn't mention were good too from what I remember. I personally thought they were mostly better home conversions than others at the time.

Just don't mention Golden Axe.

I have yet to play the PCE CD version of Golden Axe, but I've heard lots of strong things about how bad the gameplay is in it. Nodtveidt can give you a full scoop on it ;) .

the only prob of space harrier was the missing of the chessfield like playground. when even the SMS/GG version got that feature, why they couldn't do the same on the PCE  any way great game with a lot of nostalgic memories!

Heh Keranu, I'll give the full scoop when I have a chance someday (certainly not today) but as a summary I can say this...the PCE port of Golden Axe is, without a shadow of a doubt, the absolute shittiest port I have EVER seen. Awesome cinemas though...but the gameplay and in-game graphics are so terribly subpar that I cannot believe it was actually released.
