Atari Jaguar and Raiden
« on: February 17, 2006, 04:29:38 AM »
I picked up an Atari Jaguar with Iron soldier and Alien vs predator for pretty cheap a while back.  until I get a fully functioning Duo again, does anyone know of any good Jaguar games I should check out?  also, should I get Raiden for the Turbo or the Jaguar?

I had no idea Raiden was ported to the Jaguar. I suggest you buy the Jaguar version because I think everyone wants to know how faithful it is to the arcade and PCE ports.

Raiden (hu) and Super Raiden on the PCE are probably the best console versions I've played and is only second to the Raiden Project on the PSone. Super Raiden is one tough cookie but worth it.

Raiden for the Jaguar is a updated version in the graphics area. The sprites ,not all,but some, were redone, and the colors were redone to look more high end.The game is easier to beat too.
I liked the Jaguar version the most, its a worthy pick up.

Here's about all I can recommend:

Tempest 2000
Flashback
Rayman
Worms
Ruiner Pinball
Syndicate
Theme Park
Super Burnout

You can get all of those except for Super Burnout and Ruiner Pinball on other systems though. Ruiner Pinball is pretty good if you like pinball. Super Burnout is like a souped up Hang-On. Worms is only worthwhile if you can play with someone else. Syndicate and Theme Park might be an acquired taste. I happen to like them though. :)

Back when I had my Jagular, I played Doom to death and the occasional Wolfstein games. Both seemed impressive to me. Of course, I also loved Doom 32X when it came out, while some people like to trash it for not being PC perfect.

Doom is a good port, but I can't get into old FPS. An aside, I bought Perfect Dark for N64 along with my recent Turbo order from Game Express. It was only ten bucks, and I liked the soundtrack so I figured why not? Played it a bit last night, and ugh. For FPS the more modern the better, for me at least.

I never played the other games you mentioned, but I've heard that Atari Karts and DDV are pretty bad. As for the ninja game, are you talking about Kasumi Ninja?

I don't have any experience with the CD player, and there's almost no games for it. What it does have you can probably get much better versions of elsewhere, like Myst and Dragon's Lair.

One other good game I forgot to mention: Power Drive Rally. It's a top-down rally racer, good fun.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

If you like Way of the warrior,or Time Killers, the Kasuami Ninja is good for you,if you dont, then avoid it.Funny thing is I played a proto of Kasuami Ninja long ago,and the black chick was called Africana on it,very racist. There was different stages in the proto too.
Ultra Vortek is cool too, blows away Kus Ninja.
fight for Life is to be avoided at any cost unless you want to see truly bad 3d fighter quality.
The Jag cd is problematic. They did a encryption protection thing oin the cd games, and the few titles there are have bad print runs soemtimes. When go atari was selling cd games, you could request them to do a qulity check, but that only did so much good, cause soemtimes  aflawed disc could play half way trough the game then run into a crash rea, liek The Baldies I had, where I was 30 percent into it,and on a certain map it would always crash.
Doom,Wolfenstien, and Alien vs Predator rocked for that system.
Trever Mc Fur was interesting.
Defender 2kand Missle Command 3s I loved.
Tempest 2k is a must also.
If you actually liek NBA Jam TE it has a good port on Jag.

How is calling a black chick "africana" racist?

The Jagster also has a good port of Cannon Fodder.

Updated graphics? Good one ;)

You forgot to say that the game area only takes two thirds of the display. Raiden on Jaguar is quite a disappointing experience compared to the PC Engine version.

I ended up liking it more.Yea the Tg/Pc Engine port is full screen, but the flicker is hell on that game port, and the Jag version with the side boarder does a better job of giving the correct verticle aspect. The best port is Raiden Project for PSX if you want to get down to it.It beats the Tg one silly. The ports I hated the most were the Lynx and Snes ports. Those true
did suck.
