Retro-duo RDP
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:43:44 PM »
For those of you into retro gaming and want a machine that can be both portable and a system, the Retro-duo RDP is worth looking at. A friend of mine picked up two of these recently:
http://compare.ebay.com/like/360532047343?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
Basically the system can play snes and nes games out of the box. Genesis games can be played with optional adapter and gameboy games with a super gameboy. We tested both of our systems and found 99% of the games we tried worked without issues. Some of the snes games that give other systems fits worked fine like Mario rpg, Yoshi's island, megaman x 1,2,3, earthbound, and mario kart. The screen is very good and the system is comfortable to hold.
Here's the catch. The quality of the system seems to vary from batch to batch. After a ton of research it seems that almost everyone has atleast one minor problem. A handful have huge issues. The controls on our systems were very good, with mine being just a tad more stiff. Sound however was abit louder on my system than on his. Plugging in headphones not only solves this issue, but has excellent bass output and very clear stereo sound. All games tested (around 100 various nes, snes, and gameboy games, we dont have the genesis adapter) all of them worked on my machine. Two games did not work on his, doom and yoshi's island for snes. it could have simply been a variation in the cart slot that caused the problem. The battery lasts twice as long as other comparable systems at roughly 6.5 hours (they claim 8). It comes with external hookups for real snes controllers and outputs to the tv allowing multiplayer games and to be used like a system.
For me the lowdown is it worked very well and i have no complaints. Many have bought one and had issues only to exchange it and get one back that was near perfect. Despite two minor issues or machines performed excellent.
Now all they need to do is make a portable turbografx with sdcard support that loads cd games and i will be all set :)

f*cking A. That looks pretty bad-ass. I saw one of those in a shop in Chicago recently but wasn't really paying attention to what it was.

I picked up one of these along with the Genesis adapter a few months ago. Haven't had any problems with it. The buttons on the controller are a little farther apart than a regular SNES pad and it would be nice to be able to use a NES controller or Genesis controller when playing those games on it but a decent system nonetheless.

it is really cool. if you get one that works good its worth its weight in gold.  i recommend it, even if you have to exchange it once. Headphone audio quality is amazing and it covers 4 systems. If anyone needs more info just ask, i will do what i can in terms of testing and such.

These clones systems are a cool concept but quality is questionable.  I bought mine through Amazon and had to return 3 bad ones until I finally got a decent one.

The 1st one had 2 stuck green pixels and one of the speakers was blown.  The 2nd had a serious screen issue with horizontal lines going across and the screen would black out randomly.  The 3rd had a stuck pixel, rolling diagonal lines, and a blown speaker.

The 4th and final one seemed like a decent one and a keeper.  So far I've had it for about 8 month now and just a few weeks ago it developed a serious issue with the graphics being totally glitched and garbled with any game inserted.   Problem usually goes away after about 15 minute of being on.  Got a feeling this issue will get worse over time.

I really like the system and almost everything about it, but the quality seems quite poor from my experience.

I've read that there's a newer version 2.0 RDP that was just released a few month ago with a better screen and they supposedly fixed the d-pad and button issues.

Yea, thats the one I have and its alot better. However its one major caveat is the kinda crappy cart connector. I believe that removing it, and replacing it with a real snes cart connector would fix 90% of all issues. i'm not sure if i'm brave enough yet to try such a thing.

for those interested, you can in fact plug in the retrogen addon that allows you to play genesis games, then plug in the power base converter. It may not be mobile, but with tv out, and controller ports you will have a working master system as well. My friend nate discovered this a few days ago. That ups the number of machines this system plays to 5. not bad.

Thanks for the info! I was curious about that but too lazy to dig up my converter to test it out.

don't use the video out on the retrogen, it sucks, use the video out straight from the rdp, works much better. looks and sounds great.
