California Games lingo
« on: March 17, 2006, 06:18:25 PM »
I remembered this game the other day when we were talking about whether the name TurboGrafx 16 sucks or not and pop culture.  i thought you guys would appreciate a refresher on surfer slang as the late 80's are rapidly becoming a distant memory.  These handy definitions are from the very last page of the Sega Master System's California Games manual released in 1989.

totally hilarious...especially the last word.

i pulled it off the Sega Notebook
http://shell0.elnet.com/~gm-quinn/sms/
----------------------------------------------
California Spoken Here

AGGRO: If you're a daredevilish dude you'll go "way aggro," executing aggressive moves on the ramps and waves of California.

AWESOME: Awe-inspiring. As in, "That's one awesome dude!"

BIO: Short for bionic. You've got to be superhuman with aggro moves to be known as bio.

DUDE: Buddy. Can be used to express disbelief, surprise or as a friendly greeting, as in "Hey Dude!" It all depends how you say it.

GNARLY: Mind and body bendingly difficult and awesome. Waves, ramps and aggro moves can be gnarly. Then there are gnarly tests, prom dates, curfews, wheels, etc...

LIKE: Like, do we really have to, like, describe this?

RADICAL: 1) Outrageous: "Radical moves, dude!" 2) Cool: "It'd be radical if you could cruise to the ramp around 5 o'clock."

TOTALLY: Completely, entirely: something or someone is totally awesome, radical or aggro. In California everything is totally something (companion word: see Tubular).

TUBULAR: An adjective that came from the sea and has evolved into an everyday term. Parties, concerts, etc. can be totally Tubular. Its use is endangered by the word "awesome" (companion word: see Totally).

TONAR: The newest word. It is a combination of Totally and Gnarly. If something is totally gnarly, then it is without a doubt ... Tonar.
STATUS: Try not to barf in your mouth.

Yup that's like, soooo 80's  8)

Oh my gawd a random memory came back...

Those 3 imbeciles from the first 3 Ninjas movie. Those guys crack me up.
One of the guys apparently dropped out of kindergarten, and the only line he repeated through the whole movie...

"DUDE"

That's the only word he knew because he heard it 85,000,000 times a day from the other 2 dudes.

People laugh when they hear me talk in surfer dialect.

hahahhahahaha, this is a funny thread.

Fun fact: I only recently bought Camp California, and they use so much surfer-talk in the dialogue that it hurts.

Unfortunatley, I'm a product of the times I grew up in. Many terms were so commonly used that nobody even considered them "surfer" or "breakdancer" lingo, it just "was". Anyway, I still use these words, and no, I don't pretend I'm a surfer or breakdancer when I use them:
Totally (used with all of the words below)
Awesome (often "too friggin' awesome" or "totally awesome")
Dude (liberally added to the beginning or ending of sentences)
"too friggin' radical" (I never say 'radical' by itself)
"chill pill" (as in "Jasmine, you need to take a chill pill")
maxin' and relaxin' (today I'm just maxin' and relaxin')
biting moves ("don't bite my moves")

Now, I'm not claiming that I use any of this jargon authentically. This is just stuff I picked up as a kid and never shed. Most of the folks I grew up with retained a lot of this stuff as well.

^^ Haha me too man, a lot of that though I found that I started using as a joke (like Radical, its so goofy sounding now but it was THE word when I was a kid) and then it just stuck.  I always get people laughing at me when I say something is RAD or RIGHTEOUS.

Oh snap, I do say "rad" by itself (but never "radical" by itself)... as for "righteous", I never picked that up. THANK GOODNESS :)

I actually have a bit of my own vocabulary that me, my cousin, and a couple of my brothers use often, along with this friend of ours:

Crusty Mustard - This term is used for games that have really rough controls. I first thought of this term when playing O.D.D. for Playstation at my cousins house, and those words just came out of my mouth... it really was a magical moment, I believe god put those words in my mouth to describe such gameplay. Another control term we use is "soapy", and this is kind of the opposite of crusty mustard because when you say soapy, it means the controls are too slick, like when you are in a ice stage for some game and your character slides around a lot.

Metallic Nutz - You typically always use this in the phrase "<whatever here> sucks metallic nutz." So if I may make an example myself, "Energy for PCE sucks metallic nutz". Sometimes you can use this as the opposite, like "Keith Courage rocks metallic nutz". Not quite sure how I came up with this one again, but damn do we use this a lot.

Butter Zone - This is some vocab me and the gang got from the movie Hackers. There is a scene when Dade and Lord Nykon are checking out Acid Burn's "fly laptop" while she is making out with a guy in the dark. She hears them and is surprised and asks them what the hell they are doing, and Lord Nykon says "You're in the butter zone now, baby" and gives a nod. It was funny because we didn't notice this line until the thousandth time after we watched this movie and we have been using this line ever since!

3vilw33t - This one goes back to when me and my cousin were once playing Skitchen on his Genesis, back in 2001 when I wasn't aware of the 3vil l33t talk. Anyways he's typing in his skater's name and types in "3vil l33t", but I swore back then that it said "3vilw33t"! So ever since then I've been saying 3vilw33t instead of 3vil133t and everyone always gets confused. I use this word to describe something that rules.

BEEF - I know this is one that people somewhat casually use, usually in the terms of "I have beef with you". However we usually use this one for when you screw up in something. Like if you were playing Out Run or something and totally crashed into a car, I would say "Man, you totally beefed it!".

Duck Hunt - Oh man, this one is the king. You see, me and the gang have this quad-annual video game tournaments, and in the first one, we had Duck Hunt. My cousin isn't very good at these old light gun games, and we first found that out in the tournament when we played Duck Hunt. Me and my bro were ranking a huge score in the game, and so when it was our cousin's turn, he only shot like one duck in the first stage and failed miserably! We immediately started using this term for when someone REALLY screws up in a game, and when I say immediately I meant it, because when it was Julian's turn next, he was getting really close to beating my bro's high score, but I told him a joke and he was laughing so hard that the Zapper was shooting in all different directions and he failed the stage terribly! So from that moment on we started using Duck Hunt a lot :D .

There are more phrases we use, but I can't think of them at the moment. We're just a bunch of strange nerds.

Man, vestcoat is right. This is friggin' the best word -- ever. I never heard of it before, but man, I feel like I've been derprived all of these years.

Hahaha. Yes, "Righteous... in the eyes of the Lord" is good stuff. I'd love to hear someone say that. Awesome.

"Man, you totally beefed it!".
I would never use this phrase, but I like the sound of it. "Beef" is just one of those words -- there is nothing dignified about it.

Oh my god when I first joined Shoryuken.com almost a few years back, this is one of those situations where each forum I post at has its own lingo.

Shoryuken.com polluted my everyday vocabulary.

"Too good!"
"That (insert noun) is so top tier!"
"(Insert verb) that s*** down" (I'm at school right now, thats why I'm keeping it clean), it's rooted from the phrase "Rush that s*** down!" when referring to Starcraft, or advanced rushdown tactics in vs. fighter games
"Owns you for free!"

Neo Geo.com had theirs too.
"$50 shipped" (some old catch phrase from the Buying/Selling forums, I don't know what the background behind that was)
"Bulls*** lie"

And lastly, I was on Bemani board but not for long, and people said "full combo" alot.

Haha, the old fighting gamer talk!

OCVed!!! (I've done some awesome OCVs in my time before. One or two times with Chang and another time with Chizuru :D , those were definitely my favorite OCV moments.)

Man a couple of friends of mine used to have conversations completely made up of Street Fighter Alpha 3 qoutes and poses, it was ridiculous.  Those 2 guys played that game so much they had every single taunt, pose, and qoute committed to memory.

What's great about Tonar is you can tell they totally just made it up for the game.

Here's another section from the manual that's pretty good...
"
Surfing began as the sport of Hawaiian kings; now it rules the California coastline. From Santa Cruz to Rincon Point, surfers and their colorful boards dot the miles of sun-splashed beaches. And you're about to join them. You'll shoot the curl, shred the tube and probably even eat a little sand (when you wipe out). It's going to be hot. You'll be there. And you'll be awesome."

heheh..."shoot the curl and shred the tube," whoever wrote this stuff is genius.

Getting off topic, here's a few things i like to say from time to time (some of them even while i'm gaming):

Get Some(!)
Inspired by a rather disturbing scene in the movie Full Metal Jacket.  My friends and i usually shout this at the TV while hosing each other in multi-player first person shooters or gunning down bad guys in commando style games like Bloody Wolf.  Best if shouted at least twice in the time it takes to empty one clip of bullets.

That ain't worth a wooden nickel and two squirts of piss
My favorite "old man" saying.  "A Barney Converter?!?  That ain't worth a wooden nickel and two squirts of piss!"

Does a bear sh*t in the woods?
Rhetorical question.  "Did you ever play a Turbo Grafx?"  "Does a bear sh*t in the woods?"

Lord willing and the creek don't rise
"Are you going to the show this weekend?"  "Lord willing and the creek don't rise."

Boss
Used to refer to something that is totally manly and badass.  "Is this version of R-Type any good?"  "Yeah, it's totally boss."

Main Monster
Growing up, my friends and i never called the enemies at the end of a level "a boss."  from the castles of Mario Brothers to the Palaces of Zelda,   these creatures were always "the main monster"

I love the word boss.

And Guts, pretty much all fighting game fanatics remember and repeat every line in fighting games ;) .

Does that include "Go For Broke"?

That "HEY! HEY! HEY!" chant heard in Japanese SF3:3rd Strike matches at Yun's super move, me and my friends are spreading it into King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, and Tekken now. As long as it's a long combo with a steady rhythm or a juggle, you can go hey at it.

This phrase is kool because it seems to have originated waaaaaaaay back when overflowing creeks could mess up your traveling plans. Washing out dirt roads? Anyway, I never heard this before but I like it.

Haha. That's golden. This is something that I could see myself doing when I was a kid.

RELATED: I remember that my brother's and I used to say "I can't figure out how to get the boss to blink" when we were frustrated with a boss and didn't know when / where the boss was vulnerable. It never occurred to us to say "I don't know how to attack the boss" or "Where is the weak spot?"
