What's so bad about the X68k version of Ys? The non-anime styled art? That actually looks decent to me. At least it's different than the bajillion other ports of Ys.

As for hentai Valis...personally, I don't really care since I never was much of a Valis fan, but I can understand fans feeling some outrage at this. That has nothing to do with the hentai aspect (I'm libertarian and do not care if you want to view porn/hentai), but rather as Emerald Rocker explained, taking a franchise and shitting on it by completely debasing it.

I'm a bit disturbed that this is turning into an Ys thread.

But Ys for X68000 is freakin sweet. I assure you. It didn't sell well at all because fans didn't like the "different style." Personally, I love it.  :)

I took a photo of the awesome box for your enjoyment. Drawn none other than Yoshitaka Amano.  :)

Yeah, the art in X68000 Ys was more Western styled. Looked fine to me and similar to Western PC RPGs of the same era.

Thanks for the photo of the X68000 Ys box Seldane. I've seen pictures of it before, but I never knew it was by Amano. Normally, I'm not too fond of his style, but that particular piece is beautiful. Very Asian but not the typical anime style.

The cover art is fine by me and I might've gone along with the in-game graphics back during the CGI craze when anything prerendered was by default superior.

But I'll have to wait to play it all the way through to discover its special qualities.

Gawdayum! That thing is huge! I wonder what that shit would look like next to a Neo Geo cartridge case.
I'm going to go completely off topic for once, but I saw a Japanese Dreamcast game from Capcom that featured Amano's artwork as well. I forgot what it was.

Its a series of RPG's called Eldorado Gate(?). I don't know how many actually made it out, but the plan was to release one every month or 2.

The one or two that I tried had the kind of next gen graphics that I always wanted in an RPG. Although in game mag terms, they're "SNES" graphics.

I've got 4 Ys games for various japanese computer-game systems and each one comes in the same size case loaded with so much goods that its hard to keep track of as you're going through it all.

Of course the actual games are all either big or small floppy disks and one of the sets of 3 or 4 small disks could fit into half a Famicom game box.

So you're interested in box sizes, eh? Ys game boxes are generally pretty big. I've taken a picture of some of my Ys games to show you the size differences. The YsVI and Ys The Oath in Felghana boxes are insanely huge. (I don't know why I put three identical YsII games next to each other though.)  :P

I see that you also have the IBM Ancient Land Of Ys.

Do you if there are any other Ys releases for North American computers?

Only the MS-DOS and AppleIIGS versions (note that these are seperate releases in seperate boxes, etc.). There were only released in North America (not in Japan).

The other NA releases are the TGCD, MS and mobile versions.

Cool, I wasn't sure if there had been an Apple release.

Hopefully it won't take me as long to find as the IBM version.

It appears to be a bit harder to find. The box looks identical to the IBM one, only that blue sticker is different. The game itself is also more or less identical.

What pisses me off is how awful eBay's own search engine is.

I found the game sold recently pretty cheap on eBay, but I only found it through google. According to ebay's search engine, that auction's title doesn't exist.

Oh Seldane also gets mad props on the Famicom Ys 2. I thought I was the only non Japanese person who has a actual copy of it. I'm like stuck in Solomon Pass(?).
