Castle of Illusion remake
« on: September 03, 2013, 06:11:55 PM »
I just downloaded the remake of Castle of Illusion for PS3(might be on 360 as well?).  Gotta say, so far, I think it's really well done, surprisingly so!  I haven't checked to see who the actual dev was for it, but everything so far is top notch.  They did a flippin' great job on the music, it sounds very Disney with the instrument choices.  I actually never cared much for most of the music of the original.  Infact, I recall getting one tune stuck in my head as a kid(thanks to my OCD) & kept me awake for hours(Zelda 1's dungeon did the same thing).

In any case, no offense to Wayforward & their Ducktales remake, but they did a bang up job!  There's a lot of attention to detail with the animation, not to mention the sound effects.  I do think it's easier(so far, I'm in Toyland ATM), which is fine for dullards like me who have always kinda sucked at video games.  I didn't notice a difficulty setting, maybe one opens up after you beat it.  Oh, & I could be wrong, but for any of those who may have played the Uncharted games, I think the narrator in this is the same guy that does Sully!  Kinda weird, but I think his performance is really well done.

Forgot to mention, it's mostly 2D, but it does have some 3D ala Crash Bandicoot(or atleast it reminds me of it in the first 3D area).  Also, in general, I think the gfx are beautiful, even though they aren't sprites.

I think it's crap, compared to the original, which is by the way one if not the best disney game ever created.

stuff I don't like in the remake:

1. the old CoI's mickey was super lovely and cute, while the new one just looks like utter crap, directly escaped from that horrible mickey's club house tv show. who really want's to play with something like this?

if that is not enough to be a crappy game, then how about..

2. when he jumps he lands on his heel, which is total unnatural uber crap. again watch the old one of how it is done the right way, he actually lands on his toes.

3. the all around level design while looking most insignificant also is very dull and boring.

better play the original 100 times in a row than this for 5 minutes.

I've played the original thousands of times over the years since it was released.  While I do consider the original a classic, I just never 100% enjoyed it.  I've never been totally sure what it is about the original that always felt a bit off to me.  I know musically, I've never been a big FM fan, but, even without the music, it's just never felt totally there for me.  This actually feels & sounds like a Disney cartoon to me.  While I do kind of wish the original level designs were there, I still love the way the levels were reimagined.  Each to there own.

It was the first game I bought for my Genesis and my favorite game on the system.  Why would I buy a remake to something that is already perfect?

While WoI isnt't bad, it is also a completely different game than CoI. I still like CoI much better.

WoI has many cheap locations and all around I feel it is kinda unfinished in some places/gameplay. Only thing which really speaking for it is the 2P co-op mode.

I played the demo of this remake on the PS3. Where is the butt-stomp I ask??? Mickey just jumps on his enemies like Mario. That was a distinguishing aspect of the original game that is sorely missed here.

I don't much care about ANY of these types of remakes.

any remakes should be like the PSP remakes of persona 1&2; rectify the mistakes, patch the holes, minor graphics/sound updates.

While I like Magical Quest I prefer the gameplay to CoI a lot more.

I got this game. Beat it in my first session. I'll talk about it and the original on Game Sack along with other remakes in maybe a month.

I'd buy a remake of any favorite game of mine, unless it just downright sucked.  This particular game, just feels better to me then the original.  It's not like the Bonk 1 remake which I did enjoy, but wasn't as fun as the original.  I appreciate it when companies atleast try to resurrect old series, especially if they turn out nice, but also, hopefully lead into other games in the series getting remade.  It'd be nice if they did Quackshot, Fantasia, & World of Illusion, though I've not played those games as much as I did the original Castle of Illusion.  I seem to recall people ripping on Fantasia BITD.  Hopefully they'd fix whatever needs fixing if they do remake it.
