I remember a while back we mentioned in some thread about sound chips that took advantage of that fifth channel in the FC system, and made some Japanese Famicom sountracks sound superior than its usual 8-bit music, but wouldn't be able to work in the NES.

VRC6 (KONAMI)
First off, we've all heard that Akumajou Densetsu has a more superior sound format than Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse thanks to Konami of Japan's "VRC6". Now I put a couple WAV up so you can compare it. This is the boss battle music.

Castelvania III (USA/Euro)

Akumajou Densetsu isn't the only game to have a VRC6 driven soundtrack. Two other Konami Famicom titles have it as well.

Esper Dream 2: Aratanaru Tatakai

Esper Dream 2 is more evidence of the power of this chip. It kind of gave composers more leeway to make complex chords.

FME7 (SUNSOFT)
The Japanese version of the European PAL NES title "Mr. Gimmick" is the only title to have this, however it is also said that FME7 was also used in "Batman Dynamite" aka "Batman Revenge of the Joker"" to make rich backgrounds and parallax scrolling.

Konami realy knew how to push the, Famicom graphics and sound.

That is amazing! I still can't believe that's coming from a NES, even with an enhancement chip.

wow that is pretty impressive. this is supposedly because the two pins that allowed for cartridges to change the sound were removed from the SNES when it landed in the US
