PC-Engine / TG16 clone
« on: May 28, 2014, 07:10:05 AM »
if there ever is such a thing as a PCE/TG16 clone, what features/specs would you like it to have?

Personally I'd want a machine that could play PCE/SCD/SGX/PC-FX games. Kinda like a "history of NEC consoles, clone, retro machine"

I didn't respond to that thread, but a hardware clone like early faniclones would be nice. With built-in ACD support, optional sdcard for roms and isos and composite/s-video/component output and a massive internal memory for saves. A PC Engine style casing, like the NEX or whatever would be very cool.

personally, I think the real doll form factor was the best suggestion.

Agreed!

That Nex supposedly uses "beyond" repair OG Fami boards and wraps em up nicely. It's quite a nice item at $500, to say the least, but I can appreciate the effort.

Strictly business speaking EMU would be a great way to go, at least from a price point POV. However one can do emu on any Android device. I use PCE EMU on my galaxy tab and it ROCKS! specially with a Bluetooth controller.

The more designer/niche product would be pretty tight.

Maybe a retron like setup couldn't hurt either. Those are systems on a chip, correct?

I was talking about the original North American NES clone, which looks like a super compact NES:

I'll be honest, I was surprised that there was not even a mention of implementing PCE/tg16 support on the new Retron console.  It appears as though they are including all of the other imports in an effort to sell worldwide.  I understand not wanting to because of a lack of interest, do to low TG16 sales numbers here in the states but, PCE was big in Japan.  Why wouldn't they want to tap into that market?  On the other hand, if cheaper hardware was readily available in a game market that is already in short supply, we may only see game prices go up more.

Anyways, if I had my wish I would only care that a clone displayed and sounded like the real thing but include HDMI output and a built in up scaler and I would be buying one at almost any cost.

There were some random talks about a Retron like console that would be a Saturn/TG16 console, but dunno what came out of that.

I wonder if there's is a market for such a hybrid, or for a TG16 Retron like console.

Now the TG16 has this "vintage / rare" cult status, you would think making such a clone is viable. Too bad including an sd/usb option is taboo.

Purist will always go for the OG consoles any changes to that is sacrilegious and I get where they are coming from.  If the goal is to broaden the awareness of this cool lil system then sd/usb and hdmi out are a must nowadays for the mass market.

The Retron 5 makes a great platform for those that are not quite ready to make the full plunge to classic gaming systems and want that old school/ in front of the TV feel.

I spoke with the Hyperkin representative at the 2013 Midwest Gaming Classic about this very thing.  I suggested that they create a CD system which would have the capability of playing all of the CD game console games (PC Engine, CD-i, Sega CD, Saturn, etc) - basically every CD game console which they could legally do it for.  (I'm sure that Playstation wouldn't allow them to clone their system...)  I also proposed that this 'Retron CD' also have the capability to play HuCARD games, both TG-16 and PC Engine, since it 'fits' with the Turbo CD games.  The man with whom I spake seemed very interested in my ideas, and he wrote some notes down concerning them.

Hopefully he wasn't just drawing boobs and the like to make it seem as if he was interested.

The retron5 is just emulators with cartridge slots and controller ports. I expect hackers to have different emulators running Roms off its SD slot in no time.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAH

It all comes down to "demand." The idea of an all in one CD system is pretty bad ass plus it gives the idea a wider audience. Now is there a market for it? will people pay for this? if so, how much?

DAMN THE REALITIES OF BUSINESS getting in the way of dreams and ideas!

TechZombie - do you know what emu they use one their systems? I would imagine it is a custom emu, but maybe it's foundations are from already released stuff.  Robert Broglias .emu series are my favorite emu's on android.
