Fav Long Box Games
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:42:05 AM »
Okay that Craigslist thread got me thinking of all of personal favorit logn box PS1 games (I guess you can shoe horn Sega Saturn, and Sega CD games as well since they had similar cases).

and I felt like posting my personal favorits.  Be it for the box art, or the game here is my PS1 list. (Remember when some called the PS1 the PSX durign the PS2 era?).

The List: (Mind you many of these I am still working towards obtaining myself).

3D Lemmings (Lemmings 3D) (Wish Worms was also in long box form)
Braindead 13 (not sure if this is the best port of the game, but it is very enjoyable)
Bust-a-Move 2: Arcade Edition (Freaky baby art only Bust a move style can do)
D (Personaly a shitty game, but the superial sequal on the Dreamcast makes me want this)
DarkStalkers: The Night Warriors (The game and art alone makes this tops *you can get the PS3 region free ports of this game from japan if owning digital download copies alone bugs you like it does me FYI)
Descent
DiscWorld (Was so happy to find this last year at a 1/2 price book store complete)
Doom (I still persoaly like the N64 port the most, but this cover art alone makes it worth it)
Geom Cube
Gex
Jumping Flash!
Jupiter Strike
King's Field
Loaded (blah game, but fun visual, and once again cover art)
Mortal Kombat 3
NBA Jam T.E. (Tournament Edition) (This is the last port of NBA Jam I have yet to get)
Novastorm
Philosoma
PO'ed
Primal Rage (The arcade and game may be eh, the box art is where it is at)  Farting Monkey POWER!
Raiden Project, The (Shooty Shooty Bang Bang)
Rayman
Resident Evil (Once again cover art)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (As a kid I didn't have the patiance for it, as an adult LOVING IT)
Starblade Alpha
Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams (Cover Art)
Twisted Metal (Game is still fun to play, was the PS3/360 verson any good?)
Viewpoint
Williams Arcade Greatest Hits (Gotta love me some compliation games)
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (Of the few games I played on a PC this is still a very good port)
WipeOut
X-Com: UFO Defense  (I have only ever played the recent X-Com games and greatly enjoy them, hoping this one I will also enjoy)

My Haves:

As you can see my Haves versus Wants is WAY off lol.

The Sega CD had those cases long before the PS1, they were a Sega concept as far as I know.  Hence why all Saturn games have them.

But anyway, for PS1 the WipeOut with the slipcover is pretty sweet looking.

Virtual Hydlide for the Saturn will always have a soft spot in my heart though because I looked at that game all the time as a kid and wanted to buy it but never had the funds.

I believe you are correct, Sega was first (as those systems came before the PlayStation) and Sony copied them.

I can only guess they stopped doing the long box thing (Sony) because it was far cheaper to do the caller "music" jewel cases.

But men do these long boxes look grandiose.  Too bad finding these in good condition is very very hard.

Expensive ass games..........

I do wonder if they are good as I have not played a single game in that systems life cycle....although I did enjoy me some panzer dragoon on the original Xbox.

The Dragon Force box is really badass looking!  In fact, a lot of the Working Designs games with the foil embossing are pretty badass.

I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but Popful Mail (Sega CD) also gets my awesome artwork vote because I love Mail in a wholly unhealthy way.

Oh you do not lie my friend you do not lie....  My little Sega CD lot is my pride as far as sega goes.  A very underrated system/attachment.  The games may be slightly over a dozen IMO that show case the system, but man they are good.  Of my sega cd lot I have nearly all of the ones I want minus heart of darkness mostly as it has both 1 & 2, earth worm Jim, shining force, and that side scrolling shooter that eludes my memory but next to snatcher is the most expensive to pick up....oh and time gal.

I am close to picking up a time gal for $20 off evil bay but it doesn't have the box or manual....still $20 bucks is hard topass up on

When I bought them they weren't expensive other than PDS.

I had been debating for months whether to buy it (average sold listing was $120) and it jumped $30 seemingly overnight. I waited a month or so to make sure $150ish was the new going rate and won a mint/like new copy for $157.

Of course this was years ago in days of yore!

I believe you

I remember seeing certain games semi frequently and never in my wildest dreams would have viewed them as rare or expensive games.  Some games and systems I wrote off due to lack of experience or interest in my younger years that knowing what I know now....many I would have really flipped the script on what I did and didn't pick up 10-15 years ago...

Wow, looking at that list bring back a lot of great memories... I forgot just how many really good games were available early-on for the Playstation.

I either owned or still own many of them: 3-D Lemmings, Braindead 13, Discworld, Doom, Jumping Flash, King's Field, Philosoma, Rayman, Resident Evil, Starblade, Street Fighter Alpha, Twisted Metal... loved every one of them!

I also still have In the Hunt and Silverload, both of which are vastly underrated.
