Skitchin's samples
« on: August 01, 2014, 06:16:03 AM »
I've been messing around with Winamp, isolating sound channels & whatnot.  I started listening to the Skitchin' OST, and I discovered that it uses both sampled drums and guitar at the same time...how is this possible!?  I thought the MD had but one DAC channel...

One of my most played games when it came out.  I remember jamming out to Spicy Placenta with my friend, one of many standout tracks.

I don't know anything about the technical side of the music, but this was one of the best soundtracks of the Genesis, hands down.

Man I thought I was the only one that loved this game.  Of course, this was back in the day when Electronic Farts made good games.

Skitchin is one of my favorite games. Warping, grabbing a cop car and not getting caught, weapons, challenging levels, etc.

I wondered why this hasn't been updated or it's mechanics incorporated in newer games. It's suited for open world games as a means of traveling.

The MD only has one dedicated channel for samples, but there are lots of games which use various techniques to run as many as four samples at once. It usually results in lower quality samples like the infamous SFII' port, but some are very impressive. The 68000 can also be used to handle the sound instead of the Z80.

Very interesting!  Any other examples of games running multiple samples at once?

Mortal Kombat 3 was actually pretty damn impressive on the Genesis - blew away the crappy MK1 and MK2 ports on the system; played like a dream.
