s-video to vga adapters gotten any better?
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:39:40 AM »
I remember a few years back the ones on the market kinda sucked. But now with many lcd's leaving out s-video connection, and well, my sons lcd in particular not having s-video support, I was wondering if the adapters being sold finally got any better? Basically he is needing to be able to run Snes, Genesis, Gamecube, and N64 via s-video to his lcd via vga, and do it with a decent picture on a budget. He cant afford anything like the Framemeister, so preferibly the thing needs to be in the $40-$100 range, and be able to handle the older systems without lag/framerate issues. Any ideas?

I don't know about VGA, but the cheap svideo to HDMI adapters are awful and basically useless. Unfortunately this is an area where you get what you pay for. The cheapest good alternative I know of would be to pick up a used XRGB2 and some RGB cables.

even on an XRGB its not going to look good at all with an S-vid source (better than composite but still not great) does that TV have composite at least? it would honestly look better than trying to decode that signal to get RGB to feed VGA

His lcd accepts composite, but its got a tad of barely noticeable lag and doesn't look that great in general. It doesn't support game mode. Thats why I wanted to bypass it and try the VGA port with an adapter.

I was looking at that one, but cant really find much in the way of videos or post about it. I'd be happy for even being able to get him a minimal improvement over his composite in.

even the xrgb that decodes it on the fly will have some frames of lag. that adaptor you listed will probably have some lag to not sure how much seems like those adaptors are more for watching video rather than playing games.
