(1/2/2015 - 1/8/2015) Game of the Week: Genpei Toumaden
« on: January 02, 2015, 07:12:29 PM »
---------------------------------------------------
January 2 - January 8: Genpei Toumaden
---------------------------------------------------

(chosen by lukester)

On one hand, there's plenty of reason to regret that we in the west didn't get a lot of Japanese games because they were deemed to be a little too Japanese. On the other hand, there are a few exceptions like Genpei Toumaden that make you really want to imagine how the meetings went where someone convinced someone else that this wasn't going to be a problem.

Not only that, but they even used basically the same art for the box. Why did that happen with this of all games? Who knows.

Anyway, Genpei Toumaden (aka Samurai Ghost in the west) is a sidescrolling action game, and while some people don't like it so much, others feel it has a certain charm. How about you?

Genpei Toumaden was extremely popular in Japan, but the game itself is not very good.  :-k

I've beat the sequel (Samurai Ghost in the USA), which is one of the top 5 most graphically impressive HuCards and at least a 7/10 game.

Whatever happened to GotW?

5/10 is being generous, imo. I just can't get into this game at all.

This one is not for everybody, but if you can dig its charms & ass-raping difficulty, then I'd say the first one gets a 7/10, and the second gets an 8.5/10.

Everyone already knows this is one of my faves though

Perhaps people should make requests for new GotW-s?

I vastly prefer the second one to the first though in fairness I didn't exactly give the first the best chance.  I don't own a legit copy so I never played it for an extended period of time.  Genpai Toumaden wasn't like, Bad, but it certainly didn't instantly grab me as a fantastic game to devote all of my time.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

I wonder if doing it bimonthly would raise participation.

Count me in as a fan.  Something about the overall weirdness is just appealing to me.  I love anything involving Japanese depictions of hell and/or the undead as well.  Pretty brutally difficult though.
