Atari 7800?

I have had a 7800 for a few years now.
I've enjoyed the usual suspects such as Galaga, Centipede, Joust, etc.

Interestingly, I've found my 7800 is compatible with the Starpath Supercharger.
So I've been jammin' a few of those games as well.

More research is needed. Tell me, what are these homebrews you guys rave about? I sure hope to hell they're better than the stinkshits that are PCE homebrew.

The only "issue" I have with this system is the cheap power cord and OEM design of the plug.  I have had to replace the power jack on two systems in the last 10 years because the crappy wire on the original wall wart becomes faulty...  It is best to  just retrofit the same type of jack as a Genesis has and use a Genesis power supply...

My biggest issue with the 7800 is that the sound chip they intended to use was removed as a cost cutback. A few cartridges have the POKEY chip in them, but most games sound terrible like 2600 games.

I got a mod kit from Longhorn Engineer for the 2600 but I think he stopped selling kits. Recently I used http://www.coolretroprojects.com/ for an INTV with much success and they offer 2600/7800 kits. In case you want to just pay the $25 and be done with it...unless you into all the nitty gritty of modding. I have no Atari love, and only a 2600 for consoles.

I originally was going to do the simple single transistor mod for composite but ended up purchasing the composite and S - video board from sentimentalelectronics.  I figured that $25.00 was a good deal for a much more sophisticated amp than a I felt like building myself.  I am also doing a Genesis 2 style DC jack and power supply, homebuilt pause mod and a power LED.

It's my favorite Atari Console.  Just enough really great 7800 games like Ninja Golf, Pole Position, Mario Bros, Ms. Pacman and Joust 7800 along with it being completely backwards compatible!!  It's a terrific console.

I'm one of the few people that enjoy my 7800 more than the Master System when it came to 8-bit competition. 

Everyone should have one!!

I had a Master System at one time... tried a bunch of different games, and just couldn't get into it.  That's been in the back of my head while thinking of purchasing a 7800.

Pac-Man Collection, Astro Blaster, Beef Drop, Moon Cresta, Scramble, and Donkey Kong Pokey (still in the works) are highlights of the homebrew set. Frenzy, too. It's not a perfect system by any means, but she still purrs.

Also: if anyone is out to buy one, it's worth it to get an older model (they'll have an expansion port on the side of it). This ensures full compatibility with the 2600 library, as Imagic games can't fit some of the later 7800s.

Edit: Surprised no one has mentioned Food Fight! The 7800 was the only console that saw a home port (well, except the XEGS, but who has one of those?).

Almost bought a XEGS at the convention this year, but man it was too much.. $300 just for a loose console and no games, almost better off going to Ebay.

A poster named Atarifever at other forums has had me almost convinced to get a 7800 and games over the years.

Every time I look into getting a console, they are $50+ with no games, so I continue to bide my time.
