X360 fix?

I'm wondering if anyone here does any fixes for a red ringed xbox360? I bought it from a store that was going out of business. Screaming deal when I got it. It was supposed to be brand new but red ringed right out of the box. I think some a$$hole bought it and then returned it with his broken xbox inside. Anyway Microsoft won't do anything but offer me a bill of over $100 to fix it so I said f*ck them...in the ass. It's sat in my closet for 4-5 years and it just occurred to me that folks here do mods. Gotta be someone that'll fix a 360 too, right? Anyone do this kind of work? If so, what kind of price range am I looking at most likely to get it up and running?

you should have just accepted that 100 price.  If you had brought it new it should have been covered by the 3year extended warranty which they later honored around summer 2007.

 I think most people might charge around that same price nowadays.  My first 360 was bought around Nov 2006 and developed faults a few months later.  In total it needed servicing 3 times.  The final time it was sent off they added the new water pipe/heat sink combo (again I didn't have to pay for anything,  just put it in packaging myself.   and when I got it back there was no more problems.  I've sold it off to a mate and that machine is still up and running including playing GTA V.

My advice is probably to sell it off as junk and get the later models.  At least they are more reliable but depending on if you buy it  2nd hand there is no telling  how the previous owners treated it.  At least the newer models run on lower voltage so therefore cheaper utility bills.

If the $100 includes shipping both ways that not a bad deal from Microsoft. The work involved reballing the  processor and changing the heatsink isn't a permanent fix..

Yeah, I wish the old units were more reliable.  I really liked the interchangable faceplates concept and would have bought another older unit just to keep using my Deathsmiles one if I didn't know it was just borrowed time.

If I recall it was $130 for the fix. I've not checked in years what exactly is the current rate.

They wouldn't cover it when I bought it stating that gamertags were attached to it and it was out of warrenty. At which point I decided not to give microsoft a penny henseforth.

I love my big ol' Jasper Chipset Fatty Box. Hasn't turned me down over the last five years. But I wish there was a way to install a fan that doesn't sound like a starting jet engine. Or is there?

Edit: Actually the volume isn't that bad as I'm exxerating a bit. I'd rather say it's comparable to the GameCube's fan noise, so it doesn't bother me too much when playing games.

However, since I received my PS3 slim CECH-2504 (J-model) two weeks ago, I'm spoiled by the near silence in idle mode and when watching Blu-ray video.

Honestly you are probably better off just selling it as non working and buying a used newer model (slim). Can typically be had for $80 - $100 with a 250gb + hard drive

Well there are these to consider.  (some but not all the CAVE shooties are region free)

The best "fix it" solution is re-flowing the solder and using a better heat paste.  It's also a good idea to modify how the heat sink is held down.  These repairs are actually pretty easy but still are not a guarantee that the console will never have a problem again.  3rd party analysis has stated the early models with the Microsoft designed processor did not dissipate enough heat.  Also, the solder they used tends to develop hairline cracks over time when subjected to high heat.

Your unit is most likely repairable but may or may not have problems down the road.  A slim model certainly has many advantages over the early models including built in wifi capability.

On a side note I've had my OG XBOX 360 since fall of 07' and have never had a single problem with it.  On the other end of the spectrum one of my good friends purchased a brand we unit in spring of 08' from Best Buy and it red ringed the first time he ever turned it on.
