Alien Soldier - Run & gun
Ranger-X - Run & Gun/Platformer
Shinobi III - Platformer
Beyond Oasis - Action RPG
Panorama Cotton - Rail shooter
Thunder Force IV - sidescrolling shooter
Streets of Rage 2 - beat em up
Gunstar Heroes - Run & gun
Virtua Racing - racing

These are all AAA titles IMO.

Some damn good titles listed here. Streets of Rage 2 and TF IV in particular.

I would add
Contra Hard Corps run and gun
Castlevania Bloodlines platformer
Zombies Ate My Neighbors run and gun
Pulseman platformer
Wonder Boy in Monster World platform/action much cheaper than Dynastic Hero

You may wish to try
Comix Zone beat em up
El Viento platformer

MUSHA is good but I can't say I'd recommend paying the going rate for it.

Here is my top 10. Five through ten are subject to change depending on my mood and how recently I played a game.

I decided to limit it to one game per series, but obviously if one game is good, there's a good change other games in the series are good.

10. Streets of Rage 2 (beat-em-up)
9. Monster World IV (side-scrolling action RPG)
8. Phantasy Star IV (turn-based RPG)
7. Rocket Knight Adventures (platformer)
6. Castlevania Bloodlines (chain-whipping platformer)
5. Castle of Illusion (Disney platforming goodness)
4. Alien Soldier (run-n-gun platformer)
3. Shinobi III (ninja platformer)
2. Thunder Force III (horizontal shooter)
1. Sonic 3 + Knuckles (one-of-the-best-games-of-all-time platformer)

Runner up: Road Rash 2

Many of you are probably questioning why I put SoR2 last. Well, the only reason Streets of Rage 2 is on here at all is because how amazing it was at the time, and how awesome it would have been today if it were not for Streets of Rage Remake. I find it hard to revisit the classic series with SoRR out. But if you've not played any SoR game, then by all means, play 2. In fact, play SoR1 first!

Just a couple of games can't make it to the list because I've never played them. These include Crusader of Centy and Ranger-X.

Some I played just enough to know I like, but not enough to go top 10 just yet, like Beyond Oasis. I'll revisit it when I have time.  :-"

Others I didn't give a fair shot on the Genesis because they were better elsewhere, like Zombies Ate My Neighbors, which looks and sounds much better on the SNES (despite muffle); also included here are Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II, and Phantom 2040.

I'll defend my list, although I'm a bit bummed more shooters didn't make it into the top 10. Some like Gaiares, MUSHA, and Gleylancer vie up there.

My top list, based on all the six games I either own in cartridge form or as a download via Xbox 360 Live Arcade. So please take this with a grain of salt.

6. Sonic The Hedgehog 2
5. Gunstar Heroes (way too short for such a late game in the Genesis lifetime)
4. Sonic The Hedgehog (I liked the Game Gear / Master System version better, but the GG version was the first Sonic I played after all)
3. Rocket Knight Adventures
2. Jurassic Park (guilty pleasure, in fact it is not a good game, but I was amazed by it back then in the early 90s. The "SEGA!!" roaring T-rex rocks)
1. Monster World IV (pleasing music and visuals. The translation available for the downloadable version on Xbox Live is done well)

I also tried Castlevania Bloodlines on emulation. I wish there would be a release available for purchase on Xbox Live/Virtual console/PSN. Or is there?

They tried to make me do a recap
I said no, no, no

The problem with Monster World IV is the dungeons are so large they're incredibly tedious. It starts to become a chore in spots.

Going through my list of games, in alpha order:

Earthworm Jim 1 and 2
Final Fight CD
Keio Flying Squad
Mis-adv. of Flink
MUSHA <- a bit silly on the going rate
Phantasy Star IV
Sol-Feace
Streets of Rage 2(nothing wrong with part 1, but 2 does it all better)
Target Earth
Thunder Force III (Lightening is good, but my nostalgia prefers 3)

Bloodlines and Hard Corp are overrated and over priced, but you did preface this thread with "your fav". I trade off titles that I do not want to have, so I end up with pretty much all fav's...well, I do have Sewer Shark for lulz.

I'm not a big fan of the Mega Drive (Genesis) but I did own one on import when it was first released and I've played hundreds of games from it's library.

My Top 5:
1. Strider Hiryu
2. Dai MakaiMura
3. Thunder Force II (maybe not a great game but I enjoy playing it as I have alot of nostalgia with it)
4. The Super Shinobi
5. Thunder Force IV

Crusader of Centy is a very good action RPG.  It just didn't blow me away.  Not worth the going rate imho.

Sooooo many good titles, a lot of them have been talked about already.

Carts only:

Alisia Dragoon
El Viento
Sonic 3 + Knuckles (Sonic 2 is awesome in a different but also good way)
Trouble Shooter (and sequel)
Sparkster and Rocket Knight Adventures
Gunstar Heroes
Lion King and Aladdin are like the pinnacle of movie tie in games from that era to me.
Streets of Rage 2

There are lots more, these are just some off the top of my head.  It really depends on your preferences.

Black Tiger seems to like the games I like.

Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3
Phantasy Star 4
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force 1
Shining Force 2
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Vay
Dungeons & Dragons : Wariors of the Eternal Sun
Sword of Vermillion
Fatal Labrynth

I know a lot more than 5 but I love the old school RPG's no matter what platform they are on.

I grew up with the SNES, but it's pretty hard for me to jump into any pre-32bit RPG that isn't Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy V Advance. Phantasy Star II seems to me the epitome of "you had to be there, man." Could not enjoy it at all. Phantasy Star IV though is fun.

Now Landstalker on the other hand is a true classic. It's a shame that Climax/Matrix wouldn't be able to make a game as good as Landstalker until they made Alundra, but two bona fide classics is pretty good for a small-ish studio.

The trick for me with the Phantasy Star series is that I started with Phantasy Star 2. I didn't even know there was a first one. After some research back then I found the power base and an original cart of the the first Phantasy Star. It became an obsession of sorts really. But in the end it was the story between all 4 games that really pulled me into it. Phantasy Star 2 if you think it is good or bad must be played to fully understand the entire story of the Algo star system and it's habitants.
