Nintendo Releasing New Momotaro Dentetsu

Quote
This morning, we've already heard about Japanese financial outlet Nikkei's grim report about the corporate culture at Konami. But one of the other things that article has thrown up, as translated by Thomas James, is that Konami's sold off the rights to one of its old properties to Nintendo.

Momotaro Dentetsu is an obscure name to most westerners, but it's something of a perenial favorite in Japan. It's an unlikely mix of Japanese legend (Momotaro, or Peach Boy, is a popular folk tale in its native country), transport sim and board game, and has regularly appeared on consoles and handhelds since the late 80s.

Since Konami acquired the Momotaro rights in 2011, following its buy-out of the sadly-departed Hudson Soft, it's shown little interest in continuing the series. In June, series creator Akira Sakuma left Konami and, in an angry tweet, stated that the series was "officially done."

Thanks to Nintendo, that statement isn't exactly true. The Japanese giant has reportedly purchased the rights to Momotaru Dentetsu, and is set to release a new entry in the series next year.

Now, this might not sound like particularly earth-shaking news, especially when you consider that Momotaru Dentetsu probably won't be released outside Japan. But it does set an interesting precedent. As Nintendo Life points out, Hudson Soft has plenty of other wonderful games in its catalog which are also languishing on the shelf.

To name but one example: wouldn't Bomberman be perfectly at home on Nintendo's systems?

Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

Man, if Nintendo ends up saving a bunch of Hudson series it's going to cause a real crisis of faith amongst some of our more hard core members.

Like a jock beating up his tenth goth/nerd/homo of the week suddenly realizing that maybe HE has a little bit of goth/nerd/homo in him as well. Maybe we all do.

Anyway, this actually makes a lot of sense. Mario Party is a huge seller for Nintendo and Hudson is the one that actually made several of them. Dentetsu is probably much more popular with large parts of the Japanese population (and nobody outside of Japan, chances are, not even me, and I own like five of these f*cking games).

This isn't exactly the greatest news imaginable, but it is a nice little morsal of goodness in a climate of almost non-stop shittyness in the game industry.
