Homebrew Recommendations?
« on: October 05, 2015, 02:21:42 PM »
I feel like my knowledge of homebrews is  fairly limited to NEC and some NES titles.  At this point I own most of the PCE/Turbo homebrews and Battle Kid on NES.  I for sure want to get Battle Kid 2, Mad Wizard and Rise of Amondus on NES.

I feel like my lack of knowledge on the subject my be starving me of some great home brew titles.  What kind of recommendations do you guys have for any console?

Definitely anything by NG.Dev.Team, though I will admit I have not played any of there games.

This is why I will be buying a Retro VGS wait a few years for emulation.

Zaku is an Atari Lynx shooter that is a ripoff homage to Air Zonk.

There's a bazillion Mario rom hacks fan games out there for the NES and SNES. Some of them even have reproduction carts you can buy.

I definitely need to try Extra Mario Bros. Has backtracking and a pretty crazy final boss.

Then there is Second Reality Project, know as the best Mario World rom hack

There's also some crazy awesome Intellivion homebrew, like this Donkey Kong remake with 2 extra characters and all 4 levels.

Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez has done a couple of really good MSX homebrew. I'm too lazy to find his stuff.

I almost forgot I do own Gun Lord on DC.  I have played some of the other NG Dev Team shooters that my friends own and they're pretty fun.

There are way too many NES homebrews (not hacks, new games) to keep track of everything, and worse yet, it seems that most of the games released on cart are always in the context of "limited edition" carts with no reprints in NA, which means only a couple dozen will "play" the game, kinda pointless if you ask me. If you want the non-collectard side of NES homebrewing you should go to Nesdev.com forums, there's the Action 53 carts with tons of free homebrews inside, plus other projects.

There's ROMS of those compilation carts freely available unlike Nintendo Age centric homebrew releases.

Outside what has already been mentioned NeoBitz released a great homebrew for the Neo Geo with Knight's Chance and the UniBIOS King Razoola did a bang-up job with a Crossed Swords II conversion.  There's also quite a few excellent Dreamcast homebrew titles like the just released Ghost Blade.  There's DUX, Redux: Dark Matters, and my personal favorite Sturmwind.  This one I recommend to everyone as it plays like a AAA release.
