Wii U Noob
« on: December 20, 2015, 06:35:03 AM »
I picked up a Wii U bundle with Super Mario Maker for my son for Christmas and want to know more about the console.  What games should I pick up (either for the 7yr old or for me!), what should I avoid, etc.  I skipped the Wii, but hear it's compatible so if there are any must own games (especially if they're cheap), let me know!

It sounds as if it's not compatible with Gamecube discs, which is unfortunate.  I'd love to be able to play those games with something better than composite cables. :/

New Super Mario Brothers Wii U and Luigi Bros Wii U.  Nintendo Land is an excellent title to get you used to the console and tablet controller.

Download Shantae and the Pirates Curse.  It's a heck of a lot of fun.

I think all the first party wii u games are family friendly and great fun in multi player cept maybe the Zelda games.

Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D world plus Zelda Windwaker HD just sold me on the console.  Pikmin 3 is also great and at times it looks quite real although the framerate isn't that great.

You will probably enjoy a lot of the stuff on the nintendo marketplace.

Lego City Undercover - it isn't your typical Lego game... more like GTA lite....

I've really enjoyed the combo pack of Bayonetta's, and playing Wii games on the gamepad (Xenoblade Chronicles mostly, but also Skyward Sword).

I really like virtual console on the system, though the emulation is often dark and blurry compared to the real deal.

There is actually a pretty easy soft mod you can do on the wii side that let's you play gamecube games.  The picture quality is pretty amazing and you can use the wii gamecube adapter.

I would recommend the Mario Galaxy games I have a 5 and 4 year old and they love those games.

Awesome! That gives me hope.  I'll dig around for more info on the softmod.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Looks like I'll be busy this coming year. :D

I picked up Shovel Knight recently.  If you have not played it yet, you might want to give it a try.  The graphics are 8-bit stylized and its an action platformer with minor RPG elements.  I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Super Mario Maker is a lot of fun too!

Bought a Wii U on Black Friday for my kids.
I've played it a bit with them and I'm really impressed, Nintendo are truly the masters of family friendly video games.

So far we've got:
Mario Kart 8
Splatoon
Mario Maker
Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival

Next we're gonna get:
Super Mario 3D World
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros. U
