We got a Wii U for the family at launch and we have played it more as a family than any other system.
All I can do is reiterate what everyone else has said about all the first party games are good. WiiU is really like the GameCube once was with a lot of great Nintendo games but nothing else really stands out.

I downloaded a demo of Pikmin 3 and my son is addicted to it! It looks great, too.

It looks like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 and Shantea will be picked up some time this coming year. He's been playing Super Mario Maker so much lately that I don't plan on picking up any new games until that dies down.  That game is so much fun.

Will a softmod prevent you from getting online access, similar to Xbox 360 & co.?
The US GameCube is able to output S-Video via the analog AV Out, while the PAL one does RGB. Wii consoles with model no. RVL-001 will play GameCube games and allow to use pretty affordable component video cables. Later RVL-101 and Wii mini won't. Edit: Won't do GameCube games, I meant, while the Wii mini doesn't even output anything aside from composite video.

The softmod will not prevent online access as the wii mode is totally different than the wii u mode.  I have had the wii side of my wii u soft modded for months with no issues at all.

All the gamecube games play flawlessly because it is not emulation but actually using the real hardware to run the games.

Lego City Undercover is a must-have on the Wii U! It's probably still my favorite game on the system. 8)

One day, there'll be the day I own a Wii U. And play Lego City Undercover, that's for sure. It looks so much fun.

Bayonetta 2 on Wii U just became pricey after the amiibo/smash announcement.

It's a Wii U exclusive and comes with the first one on a separate disc. Be weary of people trying to sell the discs separately. If for some reason you stumble across a single disc only. Bayonetta has short hair in part 2.... spoilers lol

As far as the game itself, its a fun title, think devil may cry with a female protagonist, fan service, and angels.

For me the series feels very segaish, feels like I'm almost playing a game from the dreamcast era (in a good way) with updated graphics. There are even some sega easter eggs throughout.

I think third party game or even lower tier first party games are getting small print runs and people are hoarding or flipping and raising the price. In the long run only a handful will probably remain expensive as both Gamestop and Nintendo have been reprinting games when prices get real high. In addition Nintendo games are low to get discounts. A game like Hyrule Warirors has been out for more than a year and it is still retail price in many places.

Right now the two popular titles are Bayonetta 2 and Devils Third, Devil's third just came out and I assume will get a reprint. Bayonetta 2, probably and im guessing just Part 2 only when the amiibo come out.

Past rares Tank Tank Tank, Pikman 3 got reprints @ Gamestop

Darksiders 2 got a reprint

New Super Mario Wii U and Luigi U combo pack got a reprint.

The Wii saw a few titles explode and get reprints

Xenoblade
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Fire Emblem
The Calling
One Piece Unlimited Adventure
Dokapon
Rune Factory
Little Kings Story
Punch Out
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Kirby Return to Dreamland

What doesn't seem to get reprints are collectors/le editions. So wii u collectors will want to keep their eye on the following collectors editions.

Zelda Twilight Princess
Yoshi Woolly World
Rodea the Sky Soldier
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Wii Party U

To a lesser degree
Animal Crossing
Mario Party

Don't forget the Wind Waker HD LE for Wii U.  ;)

Personally, I don't think Xenoblade is going to be rare.  It's super abundant from what I've seen.

That seems to be the case.I remember i did keep putting off buying bayonetta 2 when it in drop in price.Either, hold out and hope for a reprint or pay up.Sure there is a digital version but i do prefer a physical copy.Still these flippers for any thing nintendo wise has become a disease to the community.

I really appreciate all the recommendations. Keep 'em coming! Right now I'm waiting to pick anything else up because Super Mario Maker is still being played *non-stop*. Definitely a worthy purchase.  It's so nice to have the house filled with tunes from the old-school Super Mario games again. So much nostalgia in that music. And now my son will have nostalgia of the same music. Genius!

(If you haven't played it yet) Duck Tales remastered is a solid title on the Wii U. I'm glad I picked the Wii U version. It's nice having the option to play on the TV or with the tablet.
