Gamer's New Year's Resolution
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:07:06 AM »
So last year around this time I decided to give myself a bit of a challenge and try to get going at beating all of the TG/PCE games I had been acquiring. Not that I hadn't been playing them already, but more so to push myself further. I started a thread on DoxPhile and surprisingly kept up with it all year and in the end I wound up beating 15 new TG/PCE games. I said I wanted to clear between 12-15 and I did it!

Here is the thread on DoxPhile.

I was thinking maybe PCEFX would be interested in doing the same (or maybe some of you already do something of your own). It can be literally anything, but I found it fun to try to keep up with something over the entirety of the year. It also helps to not let shit sit on your shelf as you play the same games over and over again (not that your favorite games are bad, but variety is a good thing too).

Challenges may include:
-Beating X number of games for X system
-Beating X game after so many years (i.e. R-Type, Tatsujin, Raiden)
-Get high score in X game
-Buy as many games as humanly possible (not recommended unless you're also doing one of the above challenges )
-Work on your magazine scan/archival site
-Print inserts for certain games
-Hold more raffles
-Obtain X game/system
-Sell your games (not recommended unless you're selling them here )
-Attend a gaming event
-etc.

I know at the very least I kept up with mine, but I'm going to give myself more of a challenge this year ranging further than just Obey related gaming. So mine is as follow.

jtucci31
-Beat 20 or more new TG/PCE games
-Play more Sega Genesis (Beat at least 5ish? Obtain Sega CD too.)
-Get a few more Sega Saturn games and beat those (Strahl, Road Blasters, Dodonpachi, other shooters)
-Beat Shenmue II for Dreamcast
-Beat Castlevania and Ys I or III for x68k
-Beat Metal Slug 3 for Neo Geo
-Play a fighting game at least once a week

I can beat the first stage, other than that the game is impossible.

The first stage? That's the easiest one! I hope you're joking, lol. I still haven't gotten past stage 3

To finish Majora Mask 3D. After a few years of begging Nintendo to release this after they released OoT 3D, I should at least finish it.  I did finish it on n64 with all masks and once did a no death full run.

Another one: I mentioned this in mod thread I wanted to hack a bram save support in my Turboexpress.  I do have the detail mapped out on Tennokoe2 and it does seems straighforward hack, everything I need can be tapped right on the cart connector and there's a bit of space between controller PCB and the battery bay so theoretically it can be done. If it works, no more trying to read tiny 3 pixels password letters in Neutopia. :D

I have to learn how to use my Turbo EverDrive (and other flash carts...I have even older, crustier PCE ones...). It was from many moons ago. I don't even have a micro SD card or reader anymore.

I feel like a buffoon.

But, I'll be honest: when I have free time, I generally opt to play a game instead of trying to figure out stuff.

If I didn't have so many tangible games, in my hands, that I wanted to play, I know that my desire/incentive to get TED functional would be much, much higher.

I beat the first stage of R-Type! Made it to Stage Three!

Now it's smooth sailing to 2017.

I don't really bother with resolutions, other than a standing order to exercise more, eat better, and most importantly to OBEY more.  I've had mixed success with all of the above, I guess, but there's always room for improvement.

I just played R-Type the other day and could not get past stage 1.  I was just messing around on the Turbo Express but now I feel motivated to put some effort into it lol.

Hah. R-Type is so good that even people that cannot pass the 1st stage still want to keep playing it.

Mine: To beat Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Daimakaimura) for the Genesis, and to locate more Popful Mail shit.

Also, move my gaming den from my home office room to the basement.

All good things! One of the first games I'm hoping to beat in 2016 is either Energy or Popful Mail

I'm going to beat Gimmick! on the Famicom, without using continues, and get the good ending. I'm almost there already, actually. I might make a little thread about it when I do.

By the way, if you are using an Everdrive N8, head over to Krikzz's forum. Somebody posted a homemade mapper-driver that enables the extra sound channels used in Gimmick. It's apparently quite accurate. Thank goodness, too, because one of the primary reasons why I got an N8 was to play this game on it.
