Finally getting a PS3
« on: January 23, 2016, 11:57:22 PM »
So, thanks to braap here in the forums...I am FINALLY going to be getting a PS3.  I had held off on getting any newer consoles, since I mainly just play retro stuff these days.  However, seeing as how these can also play PS1 games, I see it as a win and why not sorta thing!  This will be console only, so I will need to hunt down cables and a controller.

Now, I am sure there are some goodies on the PS3 that I will want to pick up, so that is the reason for this post.  Any good suggestions for me to look out for?  My genre of choice is RPG, followed by adventure/action games.  I have to admit, this will mainly be used to play PS1 games....but I am not counting out some good PS3 stuff!   :D

Ha! I bought a PS2 years ago for smiler reasons (that is, I knew that I wanted to explore the PS1 & PS2 libraries)...but, in truth, I have still spent 95% of my time with 16-bit and earlier (there are so many older games to play!)

Good luck on your VisionQuest. :)

I am sure you will have fun on your journey, but I had to put mine on hold.

The first and since then only games I've bought for my PS3 last year had been the Journey collection, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Virtua Fighter 5. The reason was I wanted the console mainly for Blu-ray playback, and since I had so many other games already for my Xbox 360. What I'll be diving in more might be games available for download on PSN.
While my better half has interest for the console due to some manga style related games like Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Regarding controllers, be aware that they rubber caps on the analog sticks are likely disintegrating into a gooey mess over time. This applies to both Sixaxis as well as Dual Shock 3 controllers. You won't always spot this fault easily on photos, since the goo also likes to run down emerging from the cap seam, down to the stick shafts right into the controllers guts, eventually into where the potentiometers are. Talk about quality.

If you need a machine that will output Blu ray video in HD over analog video connections, the CECH-250X slim model is the last in the line that allows you to do this. Newer slims (e.g. CECH-300X) as well as the Super Slims will allow video content be played in HD only via HDMI connections on displays with HDCP (copy protection) capabilities.
Thankfully this doesn't apply to games, as far as I know, but it was a very important factor for me since my old HDTV doesn't have any digital inputs.

Yeah, as for controllers, you might want to just hunt down brand new controllers.  Some games have VERY precise controls(not sure how else to word it)with the analogue stick, making it so you're character will constantly want to move.  I've been using one of my controllers that does this, with my Playstation TV, as a lot of the games I play on it, don't usually need super precise controls.

As for games, you said RPG's(your definition of RPG may vary), I'll give you a list of games to check out, even if I haven't played thru them among my backlog:
3D Dot Game Heroes if you like Zelda'ish games, twas' my first PS3 purchase it was!
Dragon's Crown, Action RPG'ish, fun game
Dragon's Dogma, Action RPG, I have it, heard it's fun, but haven't played it yet
Dungeon Siege 3, Action RPG, some put it down, I really enjoyed it
Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas, Action RPG's, I had a lot of fun, but the bugs can be flippin' annoying, might be less buggy on PC?
Final Fantasy 13, there's 3 of them(part 1, part 2, & Lightning Returns), I haven't played them, but if they're your thing, they're probably fun for cheap
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, it's Falcom, they rock, I'm sure it's fun, but haven't played thru it yet
Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Action RPG, supposed to be pretty fun, once again, another game I need to get to
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2, Action RPG'ish
Nier, some people swear by it, haven't played it yet
Ni no Kuni, see above
Ragnarok Odyssey, ditto
Star Ocean 4, ditto, some don't like it, but it may get a bad rap
Suikoden 1 & 2(PS1), if you haven't played these games, do so, I LOVE them, it's my 2nd favorite series ever just below Ys
Tales of Graces f, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Tales of Xilia 1 & 2, several games in the series on PS3, I believe they're all by former Wolf Team members, lot's of people swear by these games.
Trinity:Souls of Zill O'll, Action RPG, supposed to be fun
X-men Destiny, see above

As far as adventure games, the Tomb Raiders & the Uncharted's are all great IMO.

It would be worth your time to pick up the Uncharted games 1, 2, & 3 plus "The Last of Us".  I have been really impressed with what the developer Naughty Dog produced, and the Uncharted games should be dirty cheap now.  One note, since you have kids the opening of Last of Us might be a bit tough to play through, it's quite emotionally charged.

Just to add a bit, if you REALLY like JRPGs the "Tales of" series is well represented on the system.
Also Ni No Kuni was my favorite traditional JRPG of the generation, highly recommended.

I was late to the PS3 also; I found mine broken in a pawn shop and fixed it up with a new hard drive and a system skin to cover a deep gash.  Since your system is loose:  Good luck finding a 3rd party controller that feels as good as the Dualshock.  Nothing I have found comes close, so keep it in mind if the difference between a Dualshock and 3rd party is only a few dollars.  If you find a good price on Dualshocks somewhere, please let us know!

The best value for the money on the PS3 has been Fallout 3.  I like it even more than part 4, which got me into the PS4 recently.  Anyhow, if you like the style of Fallout, be sure to also check out New Vegas and Skyrim.  With all patches the games are very stable, but save often.  Also, one of my fond memories was being able to take $35 to Gamestop and then walk out with some really good reviewed $5 games.  There is a lot to like about the PS1, PS2, and PS3 libraries.  I also found 'Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection' to be a good value and fun on the PS3.

You will also enjoy seeing PS1 games in HDMI.  PS2 games will not work unless you have a specialty launch 60GB or 80GB Metal Gear Solid software only system (4 USB ports on the front I believe is the giveaway).
THANKS TO ALL PCEfx members who have helped fix my hardware and add to my games library!  What a thrill!

Don't play "open world" style games on PS3, particularly Bethesda games.

Got mine a couple years ago to (mainly) play the Last of Us. I usually don't care for so called "mainstream" stuff, but other players reviews got me interested. It is a nicely done game, you can make the gameplay as "casual" or as "hard core" as you want. Being region free is a huge plus, I get to play some "only in Japan" gems like, well, I rather don't say, lol.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the list. It's been a while since I played a Macross game (since VO)

While the game itself may not be gaijin friendly, dedicated fans made it accessible http://goo.gl/HPJC0z
