Rough or loose duplicate games: keep them? Sell them?
« on: February 23, 2016, 04:01:15 AM »
I am sure some of us have a small selection of duplicate games.  Recently, have you sold them or have you decided to keep them as backups?

My spares came about because a lot of (long dead) local shops never gave adequate trade credit and I decided to keep a great game (say, a complete Revenge of Shinobi) instead of bartering for $2.

I ask because I have a few rarities, the problem is that some of the CDs are rough or the carts are loose (or loose with a torn cart sticker).  I also have some spare systems that I could use to create a bundle/lot at auction.

For example, Popful Mail CD.  I got this when local shops were selling loose copies in scratched-poor condition for $60-$70.  This one was advertised as 'book and CD inside folded insert' in a text only BIN auction in the early 2000's.  When I got it the front of the manual had a rip from the center-top to midway down and the 'folded insert' turned out to be the back of the original box insert-sans both spines.  I added a real Sega CD case and it was my main copy until a few years ago; I never hated the condition and I considered it a deal as I got it complete (but rough) for the cost of a loose disk.  I also ran the CD through an expensive resurfacer, but there is a spot on the disc outside of the data area that did not come out; nothing that affects the playing of the game since there is no data in that area.

I have a few other games just like this one:  Flashback CD that plays all the way through but crashes at the very end of the demo movie.  Pirates Gold! that is a loose cart with no label. King of Casino, a complete copy of Keith Courage, etc, etc...

Are they better off with me, since I do not mind the condition problems as long as they play as a backup?  Should I pack them in a box for the next 20 years?  Should I try to bundle all of them with a system and detail every little thing that's imperfect with them at auction?  Keep them for family vacations and traveling?
THANKS TO ALL PCEfx members who have helped fix my hardware and add to my games library!  What a thrill!

I sell my dupes or raffle 'em away.  The odds of me ever needing a backup due to age or careless handling of my games is slim to none.

If the space isn't an issue I see no reason not to sit on them honestly.  I have been slowly selling off my dupes to fund other things when possible.

Anything worth less than like $15-20 goes to the local shop though, I'm not gonna be arsed to sell stuff like that unless someone asks.

Meh, I've come across a couple bad games in my time. None Turbo, though. Those things seem to hold up really well. In fact, I think I only had 2600 games and one Genesis cartridge go bad on me, all second-hand so who knows what crap they went through before they came to me.

So yeah, I'll third Necro's post: sell them or raffle them here to those in need. You likely won't need dupes.

I think the only game I ever had that just wouldn't work (not including CD games) was a copy of Maniac Pro Wrestling for the PCE.  I'm sure I've easily had over 1000 cartridge-based games pass through my hands.

I wish I had dupes like Popful Mail.  If I find an upgrade for something I usually hang on to it to trade for something else later on.  No reason to hold on to two copies of a game.  I do break this rule for hardware though.  I like CIB hardware then have another example I actually play on.  It's my main collectard tendency.

So far in the short time I have been into playing the Turbo stuff have I come across one game that did not work. It was an arcade card. Rest work just fine. *Shrugs* I would sell/trade/raffle them away.... Pending on your generosity I guess

Some dupes can be so cheap it's just better to raffle them.  No sense in having two copies.  I did lose a couple games over the years due to multiple moves.  So in that regard it could be one reason to keep em.
