Turbo Express -my Grail

Been dreaming about having one since being a kid and seeing the commercials and the ads in the game mags.

Local shop just got it yesterday and I scooped immediately. One owner and no scratches. Just needs a cleaning and an audio recap.

Any suggestion where to buy a trust worthy AC adapter? And a cap kit?

I would contact Keith courage here on the forums he did a spectacular job on mine including a screen upgrade making it much more playable with a modern screen .

Thx. Always hear great stuff about Keith. Just don't know if I want to mod the screen quite yet. At the moment I'm wanting to keep it stock (just with new audio caps)

you should be able to find one with this info or get a universal supply.

here is one too if you dont want to worry about tracking a compatible one down.  be warned that this seller's supplies usually have really short cables though so you may need to play close to the wall.

Interesting. That's actually a 9v power supply. So the Express can handle 9v? If so, that makes the AC Adapter search much easier.

yeah, its just like other systems.  it has a voltage regulator in it.  9v is not going to hurt it.

My first Turbo system was a TurboExpress, I also wanted one since I was a kid.  I actually like the old screen, I still enjoy comparing it to the Lynx, Gamegear, and even Nomad (it is very much ahead of its time).  You will noticed a little bit of what appears to be burn-in at startup, this goes away though and is normal.

If you do the recap job yourself, the tolerances are close so a needle nose temperature controlled iron is almost required.  I like Weller branded products.  It is totally understandable to send it to a member here to work on.  Both of mine needed both a screen and a sound cap and have been otherwise very solid.

I see you also have the TV tuner; for a bit of fun it has an AV in jack that can be used to hook up a modern console to use the screen as a monitor.  There are a few youtube videos that show owners using it to play an xbox 360 and similar as a gag.

On both of my units, the AC adapter connection is finicky.  My first TE has a new power jack and my second has an OEM jack...both operate the same with a stock TE power supply.  I mostly keep to rechargeables and it has never been a problem.

Enjoy the nostalgia, the TE makes having a double or two very convenient for road trips.  Raiden rocks on it!!!

Grats on the find, the TE is a great lil device.  Love mine.  I've been on the fence for years now about getting a new, bigger screen.  It needs a new screen but a huge part of me doesn't want to permanently change it (by cutting a bigger hole).  On the other hand, it seems silly to replace the original screen with one the exact same size.

Yeah, I messaged Keith about my screen. As I was curious about what options there were concerning it. He suggested just keeping it stock unless there's a major issue with it. Which is what i'm going to do.

If I had gotten a screen, I wanted something that would have fit in the existing space. No cutting and definitely didn't want to loose the black overlay that says "TurboEXPRESS".

As to the recap, I ended up sending it to a friend. As he's already repairing a Neo-Geo motherboard for me. Else I would have sent it to Keith. After doing a little reading I discovered the caps are no joke on the express. I hadn't realized they were surface mounted. URGH..

Awesome find! I have only ever seen one of these ever. One of my friends had one when they were released, and I just could not believe real console games were portable. Enjoy it! I bet there are many nights where sleep will be hard to find for you this upcoming summer!

C'mon guys you know you want a bigger screen lol.  I been really happy with the bigger screen that Keith did for me last year.  It's nice to be able to read the text on games that require it.

Back in the day when the TurboExpress was still being sold in stores and I got one used I couldn't find the AC Adapter for it but it does take batteries. So since I couldn't find the official AC adapter I ended up buying a Universal AC Adapter from Radio Shack.

With a Universal AC Adapter, I could toggle the voltage and whatnot on there. This ended up working better for me as I could carry one AC adapter for both my TurboExpress and Gameboy. Only catch was they ran at different voltages so I always had to remember to change the voltages. I remember the Gameboy ran at lower voltage and there were a few close calls where I forget to change the voltage and I thought the Gameboy was done for sure but luckily it still worked and it was never permanently damaged.
