I just picked up a new 3DS XL so I can get the best possible experience playing this game. If I'm going to put 80-100 hours into it, and I'm quite likely to I'm going to get the maximum enjoyment from the game.

I wish they would demake games like this into 2D, instead of even more 3D.

The New 3DS is fantastic, just moving around the menus and Street Pass Plaza is a much faster experience.  I am glad I got one at launch though to get maximum time out of it, because I don't know how 3DS and NX are supposed to co-exist if both are portable systems.

The 3D works a lot better since it's using the front/top camera for head tracking so the screen doesn't need to be held out to hit that 3D sweet spot.

Have it pre-ordered. It's the only DQ game that I've started but didn't beat, so I'm hoping to rectify that. It sounds like there have been lots of improvements to the PS1 version at least.

Same here as far as the main series goes. I got a ways into the PSone game and stopped. They did some level balancing to reduce grinding and apparently some other tweaks to make this a bit smoother to play compared to the original.

Yeah the Ps1 version is just a total monster. I know some people have played 70+ hours and not got to disc 2. I didn't get quite that far. If memory serves I only played about 20-25 hours and it felt like I hadn't done much. It really was grindy even by DQ standards which is saying something. I played through VIII again recently (within the last year) and while grindy it was still just a lot smoother of a game in general than VII.

I actually finished the ps1 version but it was a 120 hour game with quite a bit of grinding to get those classes leveled up.  I didn't even get into some of the monster classes the game had so I can imagine I could have put even more time into it.

After playing VII I always felt let down by VIII.  Yes it was pretty but it was pretty generic in the  game play department compared to previous games in the series.  I liked the 4 characters but I wish there was more people in the game to play as.

I am definitely looking forward to picking this up on Friday it's one of my favorite Dragon Quest games.

The added radar for pieces you need for maps is going to be a godsend

main complaints:

The text I find is too small.  Wish there was an option to have larger fonts ingame.
There is a bit too much pop in when running in the field. Especially on the trees.
The placement of the camera angle when you walk into a new map may cause you to walk back into a previous map or monster.

Just want to add, This game just keeps on playing with like no sign of coming to an end.  Just when you think you've done the main story it just continues...

Put about 90+ hours in this now and the main story hasn't finished XD

I've just maxed out the hero job now but I think Champion has some of the best attacks.

My DW7 for the PS1 is owned, but backlogged way back to hell... Heh. I loved I-IV for the NES, good times, and I had hoped to get into the SNES versions when they got properly fan-translated, but I lost interest eventually.

Is 7 independent of all the others ? Would you miss much if you just jumped right into it ?

I swear like the Final Fantasy games they are.  I've only ever played 8, 9 and the wii game.  By far 7 is my fave but the backtracking in this game is worse than the L.o.Xanadu games
