Anyone else use spreadsheets to keep up with games?
« on: October 03, 2016, 06:21:25 PM »
So I have decided to make spreadsheets for games I have played since I can't seem to remember titles. Essentially I am making a separate spreadsheet for each console with rows for title, rating and genre. I already have my own rating scale and will be defining genres on my own. Anything else I should add?

Just wondering if anyone else does this or if I am just being weird.

A simple document separated by console (which are then separated by years) is what I do, with the games themselves in alphabetical order.

The problem with ratings for me is that they change, or I end up focusing too much on them, or I didn't end up giving it a fair shake. I know each game I own, too, so I don't have to worry about genres or anything like that, although using RFGen to keep track of publisher is neat. Ideally, that would also include developer.

I keep track of all software and hardware I own via spreadsheets.  Each spreadsheet is seperated by hardware manufacturer (i.e. NEC, Nintendo etc.).  Then I have sublistings for all hardware together and then all software is grouped by platform and listed alphabetically.  I have estimated values listed for everything and I evaluate that every six months since the market keeps changing so quickly.

I know many of you will cry that I'm a "parasite" about that but it's what my insurance company suggested should I ever have a fire, theft etc.  I also have pictures of the games, hardware and serial numbers (suggested by a cop friend of mine).  I have all of that stored on both of my computers and another copy of all of it on a USB stick that I keep at my parents' house.  You may also think I am a nut for doing all of that but I am definitely anal and when all of this stuff miraculously became valuable I got so paranoid about the loss if something were to happen.  Once the market crashes and values come back down to earth I can delete my spreadsheets.

Then I have another spreadsheet setup the same way of my "wanted" list.  That is separated by platform and lists condition I'm looking for and average sold pricing.

If you use Mac, I highly recommend Gamepedia.  I've been using it for years and just love it.

There's also an app called Pocketpedia which will sync with it, so you can take your collection on the go.  The developers also make organizing software for books, music and movies too.

What about using backlogger for this, dean ??

You can accomplish almost the same thing, and when you're gone, there'll always be a public record of your game playing history assuming the site continues for the long run.

For insurance purposes in case something should happen, I keep a spreadsheet of what games (and books, cds, and dvds) I own.  It's just a list of titles, though; I don't try to assign value, keep track of which ones I've beaten, etc.
U.S. Collection: 98% complete    157/161 titles

I use google spreadsheets for my collection. It has kept me from buying the same game twice a few times now :) It has been really useful in continuing my mission of getting all NES licensed cartridges (97 to go!)

Once the market crashes and values come back down to earth I can delete my spreadsheets.

I just don't see a "crash" happening. We may see prices slowly go down for some titles but there is no way prices get slashed overnight, probably looking at decades for declines (if ever).

Damn Desh, it's like you is me!

I had the same paranoia a while back about the "value" of stuff and insurance told me pretty much the same thing.  As long as their value doesn't exceed the "possessions" value in my insurance (LOL) it helps abate my worries a bit.  I'm not as hardcaw as you though, I don't have pictures of everything individually, but I have some gameroom photos I took awhile back which encompass most of it.

But yeah, I use Google docs a lot for keeping track of what I've got and what are dupes to get rid of.  Yay for smartphones!  The hardest part is just getting a solid list of titles for a full set or something.

I have a lots of photos of my library as of....10 years ago. I haven't bought much since then, so it's not worth documenting.

There is no way I want to create a spreadsheet.

Before I buy a game, I look to see if it is on the shelf. Or, I look at a photo of the shelves.

I traded or gave away nearly all of my doubles... and I recently got rid of stuff I don't have much time for now (Atari 2600 and tons of games).

I actually like 2600, but I just have too much stuff. I got rid of a lot of handhelds, too (Lynx,Game Gear).

So my old photos are *actually* wrong, but o don't care.

I use GTZ to keep track of what I have, but sometimes I'm lazy about updating it. As for tracking what I've beat I just keep a text file but I've never had call to actually check it yet to see if I'd be accidentally replaying something.

It will be nice to one day have enough space to have everything out on shelves.

I used to keep everything in bins and temporarily take out the games I was currently playing. Every few weeks I would rotate the games/consoles I was playing.

I still rotate the consoles (limited physical space + 5 year old twins who play with everything) allow me to *limit my potential losses*....in theory, anyway.

No, I'm not super crazy with the pictures.  Overall pictures of the gameroom and shelves.  Then pictures of each serial number on the hardware.

Me. Always have. I have a spreadsheet of everything I've bought and sold over the years
