I've always felt the PCE was a very underrated console. Yet it did very well in Japan, if only people in the west knew more about these games, I think the PCE would be better appreciated. I certainly am learning a lot reading through this forum.

If one was to offer people who are familiar with Genesis titles a game that is similar (game play, theme, etc) on the PCE, what would you recommend? Focusing on exclusives only (so no Snatcher, Fatal Fury Special, Lords of Thunder, etc).

A list of top exclusives on the GEN/MD and what I think might be a good alternative on the PCE

Sonic series - ?
Samurai Showdown - Martial Champion or Flash Hiders
Shining Force Series - Louga series
Phantasy Star Series - Cosmic Fantasy Series
Gunstar Heroes - ?
Streets of Rage - Crest of the Wolf
Beyond Oasis - Ys 4
Crusader of Centy - Neutopia
Comix Zone -- ?
Ranger X - Spriggan
Lunar - Legend of Xanadu Series
Shinobi series - Kaze Kiri
Castlevania bloodlines - Dracula X
Monster World IV - Sol Moonarge
Keio flying squadron - Sapphire? Sylphia?
Mercs - Mystic Formula

Trying to create a list of PCE alternatives to GEN/MD top exclusives

Well, the problem is that Shubibinman 3, which is a kindred to spirit to Gunstar Heroes (dare I say a *precursor* to Gunstar Heroes), is pathetically easy and therefore, ironically, the *antithesis* of Gunstar Heroes (which is challenging).

:)

Spriggan 2 = horizontal (and closer to Ranger X)
Spriggan 1 = vertical and closer to MUSHA (series)
Monster World IV ~ Dynastic Hero?

Anyway, I do like the spirit of this thread!

There might not really be a good analog for every MD game you listed... but it *is* a fun exercise.

ONE CAVEAT: the problem with such a list is that it prioritizes the OTHER platform and creates the false impression that OTHER platform is *better*.

This is absurd, since PCE has its own strengths and stable of unique games.

THAT SAID, I can't wait to specific titles suggested :)

Gunstar Heroes is also pretty damn easy.  Just throw, throw, throw.

The problem with your approach is that you're trying to match PCE games to games you picked for Genesis. One of the reasons that retro fans aren't familiar with much of the PCE library is that it has many more unique games which don't fit perfectly into cookie cutter genres and lots of games that casual gamers tend to not appreciate.

Then there is the language barrier for so many great games as well and too many current retro fans now think that having to use a walkthrough is somehow unacceptable, not matter how more text reading and menu management they often do in translated SFC RPGs.

So the only way to recommend a long list of games to someone is to first find out what their unique taste and tolerence is. If they have the popular attitude that there are only a handful of genres and games are supposed to play a certain way, it will be a very short list.

This is a great example of the problem I described. People sorting games into some of those broad genre titles are going to be very disappointed if they randomly pick the ones which don't play anything like the genre.

Good grief BT.

I was going to criticize your smug argument, but I instead gave exactly what you wanted. Long lists of the best games. With not just genre, but even short descriptions that explain unique differences. I actually tried to support you for once and yet you are on your high horse again.

Please, Give some examples of how you want games to be recommended on this forum. I'm no mind reader. The old saying goes "if you want something done, you just gotta do it yourself"

Nothing on Feka can compare to Ninja Spirit. Quite a few things compare to Soldier Blade, just not as well.

I'm just gonna come out and say it...Sonic sucks and there's no reason for there to be an entire series of games. Therefore, there is no reason for a comparable title on the PCE.

I don't disagree, they're not supposed to be exactly the same. but its supposed to use something familiar to introduce people some one to something that has some similarity (game play, genre, or theme).

As for Sonic, not looking for something that plays like Sonic, but  very good and fun platformer. The only one I can think is the Bonk series.

Did you see my response to SuperDeadite? :)

My comment was in reference/comparison to Shubibinman 3... Shubibinman 3 makes Gunstar Heroes feel "Hard Corps." :)

I am *eviscerating* Shubibinman 3 because it is such a disappointment (you don't have to touch the controller and you will beat Shubibinman 3 on first try).

I know I tend to exaggerate, but I don't think I am when I say...

Quote
Shubibinman 3 = Shenanigan x3

...because it is insultingly too short and too easy (especially given the challenge of the first two Shubibinman games).

:)

TO BE HONEST: I thought my claim that Shubibinman 3 = the *precursor* to Gunstar Heroes (I haven't even looked up release dates) was the outrageous claim I was going to have a hard time defending!

:)
