Sega Light Phaser
« on: October 13, 2006, 08:10:46 PM »
I just got a new Sega Light Phaser for my SMS (thanks neokellyzero!) and it's in a lot better shape than the crappy one with a sticky trigger that I had been using.  Anyway, I've totally been digging on Rescue Mission and the couple other games I have.
I never really liked the NES light gun games back in the day and I feel that the SMS shooters are a lot more fun.
This is a list of Light Phaser compatible games I just found on wikipedia:
    * Assault City
    * Gangster Town
    * Marksman Shooting
    * Missile Defense 3-D
    * Operation Wolf
    * Poseidon Wars 3-D
    * Rescue Mission
    * Rambo III
    * Safari Hunt
    * Shooting Gallery
    * Space Gun
    * Trap Shooting
    * Wanted!

Any recommendations for what I should get next?  Besides Rescue Mission I have Safari Hunt and Shooting Gallery.
Are there any two player games that allow two Light Phasers at the same time?
I also just noticed that Operation Wolf is a light gun game.  How is the PCE port?  I'm guessing it must suck without a gun.
So...if anyone wants to talk about 8-bit light gun games, do it here.

I used to really enjoy Rambo III and Gangster Town (love shooting the bottles on the shelves and holes in drum kits), so I'd definately recommend those two.

Yea, Operation Wolf with no gun is a bit lame.

I love NES and SMS light gun games. In fact just last week I bought Rambo III from a shop, but unfortunately I need to mess with my Light Phaser to get it working correctly again because it's all wacky right now. Missile Defense 3-D is some really kick ass gaming.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Gangster Town is two player simultaneous if you have two Light Phasers.

Were there ever any 2 player Zapper games on the NES?  Did the PCE ever have a gun?

I don't know of any 2 player Zapper games for the NES, they were mostly score-based kind of games (my favorite light gun game of all time being Gum Shoe). And as far as I know, no light gun was ever made for PCE unfortunately :( . There are two games I can think of for PCE though that would have been well suited for a light gun, which are Operation Wolf (HuCard) and Yu Yu Hakushou (SCD).

Yep, the Turbo was just about the only modern system that never had a gun.
I gotta say, the light phaser looks awesome; much cooler than the grey and orange NES pistols.  In fact, the whole line of Master System peripherals has a really cool aesthetic.  The Control Stick, Pad and Phaser all look totally spiffy.  I am having some trouble getting used to the control stick because the buttons are on the left side.
I think it's kind of cool how the SMS never had a multi-player adapter allowing more than two players.

So Gangster Town is two-player, I’ll have to try that out.  Is Wanted two-player as well?  Are 3D Glasses necessary for the 3D Phaser games?

The only Light Phaser game that is in 3D is Missile Defense 3D, and yes, the glasses are required.  However neither the 3D Glasses nor the Light ZPhaser are dependent on the other.

Wanted is one player.

Zapper rulez the Light Phaser :D . Don't get me wrong, I still love the Light Phaser but the Zapper is so 80's that I have to prefer it. The light guns for some older consoles (and the stand alone ones) like Oddessy II kick ass since they look realisitc, you just don't get those these days.

Someone should homebrew up a SMS Virtua Cop Light Phaser demo.

That'd be wicked awesome.  :D

The Light Phaser looks so much cooler because it was designed as a Laser Tag-type toy and cross marketed in the Zillion anime, Zillion game and commercials for the Laser Tag toy get-up itself.

Not too long ago, I finally remembered to try out the Saturn light gun games with my projector. Unfortunately, shooting the screen doesn't work, but shooting at the projector does.

So I hope to pick up one of those see through screens for shooting a projector through to see if I can get some 100" Virtua Cop action going.
