ADPCM
« on: June 28, 2017, 09:09:47 PM »
Hello.
I'm fixing a couple of PCE Duo's and want to check ADPCM after changing OpAmp IC503.
Can someone tell me a title of a CD game that uses ADPCM and when I should hear it?

I can easily tell if Hu-card and streaming CD audio is working (which it is :) but no idea when and where ADPCM is used.

Thanks

Pretty sure in Gate of Thunder, the "voices" for power ups and some explosions are ADPCM. You can use sound check. Also, Pomping/Buster Bros all the sound effects are too...

I had a Duo with the ADPCM go out, too me a while to figure it out since I was playing a lot of HuCards at the time. Ended up mailing it off after feebly attempting to repair.

Gradius II (Power Up voice), I think. At least this is where I first recognized that my Duo had bad caps. The issue went away after having it recapped.

Man, I feel like I am guessing now.

But Y's 3 was one of the better games to test for this. When the game is inserted and ran it goes way out to the edge of the disc for cd-rom audio and then once the game is started and you are standing on the bridge with the opening dialog being played. That dialog is all ADPCM and plays at the inner edge of the cd.

I usually test all my systems with original Y's 3 and It Came from the Desert discs and a burned English Y's 4 disc.
Mickris pointed it out to me a while ago that TEDs need to be tested with Blazing Lazers on region modded systems to ensure they work properly. So I play through the first two levels of that game.

But audio I am sure Y's 3 is the best option as you can get the audio output you want without even playing the game, for testing purposes.

Dragon slayer 1 and 2 both use ADPCM right away at the beginning of the game for voices.

Am I wrong or does Double Dragon II use ADPCM (upon hitting RUN at title screen) to bless our ears with:

"Dub bull Dwaaah Gun, too"?

@MNKyDeth

I got an original copy of Ys3 from ebay and it played perfectly on the system I was recapping. All the speech from the bridge and town was audible (is slightly lower than the intro voices).
Good call, I'll keep this to hand when testing PCE Cd systems from now on.
