Intel NUC and Mini PCs
« on: February 20, 2018, 01:35:41 PM »
I feel like an old fart...apparently they make gaming pcs the size of bibles now?? And regular laptops on tiny sticks...

There's a new Intel model coming out this year, and supposedly the performance is significantly improved. Even plays Just Cause 3 at max settings on 60 fps.

Anyone familiar with minipcs in general?

Yes, NUCS have the worst heat dissipation ever. Especially if you decide to use M2 drives. I have seen them burn out those drives (even with the cheapo heat sink on the m2 drives) quick. I have also used the Lenovo's mini pcs and the same kind of thing, heat killing ssds and hard drives in general. My suggestion: Build one yourself with a third party case though good luck finding a decent gpu for a good price due to those crazy miners.

I've never owned any mini-pc stuff, but it always seems expensive and with limited upgrade paths and more expensive parts replacement if something wears out or dies.

Googlerins says that linked system with a i7-8705G would give performance somewhere around a 1050Ti, which is pretty good for a portable but rather low end for $1000+ on a desktop.

Once the machine shrinks to being smaller than your keyboard I don’t see why the hell you’d like want to shrink it anymore. For a Moon mission, sure, but general games/computing/media? Why?
