The Jaguar/3DO thread.
« on: December 03, 2006, 02:11:46 PM »
:mrgreen:Okay, since I am making a game for the Jaguar CD system as we speak, I have decided to make a thread for the Jaguar and 3DO systems. I am seriously curious as to the feelings on those consoles here, especially since the "Underdog" aspect of this site is so apparent. I'll even start things off with a top ten list for both systems, hows that? Played any of the games all?

Jaguar/Jaguar CD
1.) Tempest 2000
2.) Battlesphere
3.) Alien VS Predator
4.) GORF
5.) Rayman
6.) Iron Soldier 2 CD
7.) Pinball Fantasies
8.) Defeneder 2000
9.) Iron Soldier
10.) Hover Strike Unconquered Lands

3DO
1.) Super Street Fighter II Turbo
2.) Wing Commander III Heart Of The Tiger
3.) Autobahn Tokio
4.) Killing Time
5.) D
6.) Doctor Hauzer
7.) Samurai Shodown
8.) GEX
9.) Starblade
10.) Psychic Detective

Runners Up Jaguar; Black Ice/White Noise Revision 19, DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, ZERO5, Towers II, and Protector SE.
Runners Up 3DO; Road Rash, Return Fire, The Need For Speed, AD&D Slayer, Lucienne's Quest, and Burning Soldier.
END OF LINE.

Runners Up 3DO; Road Rash, Return Fire, The Need For Speed, AD&D Slayer, Lucienne's Quest, and Burning Soldier.

I had both systems for a while.

I played through Wolfenstein 3D on Jaguar once and then played DOOM over and over. I don't think I got around to buying any other games before selling the system, since most titles were still pretty pricey, even though the Saturn/PSX had been out for over a year.

The Jaguar will always be worthwhile for me because of those two games alone. I played through most of Rayman Saturn and it was pretty cool, except for some cheap spots (one game ruining boss in particular). So if the Jag version's really as good as it's supposed to be, then I like it as well.

Pretty much the same deal with the 3DO. I started buying games for it as they were being discounted for good. SFIIX is a good enough port, but feels more like a consolized version than the later ports that feel more like emulation. I didn't play too much of it, since the part II series went down hill for me after CE and at the time, I was already playing SF Alpha on Saturn.

Lucienne's Quest blew me away and will always be a great game to me. It's easily the best 3DO game and pwn3s all the competition. It was pretty much exactly what I wanted in a next gen 3D RPG. I played through Wolfenstein once, like with the Jag version. The 3DO version looked way more next genny and hi-res at the time.

I've always wanted to try 3DO DOOM, even though I know how bad the port's supoposed to be. I just love playing different versions of games to see the differences, no matter how good or bad a port really is for each console.

I remember how the Jag's composite picture seemed blurry and just felt kinda 'cheap'. But the 3DO had a very nice image and felt more like a Saturn on my TV.

To truely appreciate the Jaguar, you need S-Video. Are you sure that you are not getting the Wolfenstein versions confused by the way? The Jaguar version was enhanced and ported by id themselves whereas on the 3DO it is a straight up port byInterplay. I will admit that I love the music in the 3DO version more though, but gameplay and look goes all the way to the Jaguar boss!

I haven't been able to play much Jaguar games, though I am definitely interested in getting the system sometime (almost bought one complete for $50 once at a convention). I am glad to see all of the homebrew support it gets, rock on. On the other hand, I love 3DO!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

All I know is, I hooked up the Jag version and it looked good. But I hooked up the 3DO version right after to compare and it was like jumping from 32X Doom to Xbox360 Doom. Its one of my few not-so-hazy Jag/3DO memories. I'll compare them again if I ever track down both systems and games.

I've always hated the Jag since it was easily the worst system ever released, but the 3D0 had some pretty cool games.  I'd honestly rather play virtual boy and get motion sickness and a headache than play the Jaguar.

I have a special place in my heart for the Jaguar and 3DO.  Back when the Jaguar was released, I lived in a fairly small town in AK and we had one Atari store there.  The guy who owned it was kinda crazy but fun to BS to about Atari stuff.  Anyway, I asked my mom for it for Xmas that year and I got it.  I remember opening it up and actually crying when I saw it :P

Anyway, I think I had Cybermorph, Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy and Club Drive at first.  Man, Trevor McFur...the gfx were pretty but no music?  AKKK!  I think I dubbed LoT music on top of the game while I was playing it at one point :P

Loved Doom on the Jag (even made my own link cable so my friend and I could play on two Jags), loved AvP (the best FPS at the time) and of course Tempest 2000 was awesome (still rock out to the music to this day).  I had a bunch of other carts such as Kasumi Ninja (oh man....voice over is so freaking funny...and the drum menu music is classic), Iron Soldier was fun times, Checkered Flag was just a bad version of Virtua Racing, and Cannon Fodder was fun.

3DO, as much as I wanted it when it first came out, was way too expensive ($700!) and didn't buy one till I could pick it up new for $100.  I had about a dozen games, Road Rash being one of the most fun I remember playing...as well as Street Fighter, Gex, and the MUST HAVE game for 3DO - Return Fire.

Hice to see that some people like these systems. Too bad that there is hate too, but that is the nature of things I suppose. The sad thing is knowing the games that were supposed to release for the Jaguar that didn't as it may have actually saved the system for awhile longer. Still have both systems though and have a bklast playing them both as well to this day!

Yea I liked the Jaguar. Doom,Alien vs Predator,Kusami Ninja,Ultra Vortek,Defender 2000,Missile Command 3d,tempest 2000,Super Burnout,Flashback,Raiden,Wolfenstien 3d,Brutal Sports Football,Power Drive Rally,Rayman were all great. I loved Battle Morph,Hover Strike cd,and Blue Lightning,but those didnt really justify buying a Jag cd system.

I still perfer a 3DO now anyday over a PS1.

I picked up a Jag with AvP and Iron Solder on ebay last year for $50.  Since then I've been buying mostly Duo games and have only added Cybermorph to my Atari collection.
My brother borrowed a 3DO from a friend for a several months in 95-96.  The owner didn't have many good games and we mostly just played Need for Speed and Out of this World.
I pretty much like all underdog systems which is probably why I haven't been into new videogames since the market has been dominated by Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft.
I'd like to get a 3DO, Sega CD and/or Saturn someday but for now I'm content with my TG16, SMS (model 2!) and Jaguar.

Tempest 2000 with a Rotary Controller CAN NOT be beat.

I can't bring myself to add a 3do to my collection. I just can't do it.

I hate all these systems. I see absolutely no reason to use them. Two exclusive games is not a valid reason, not to me.

Just because we like underdog systems like PCE, Neo Geo, and Saturn doesn't mean we like crap. The PCE, Saturn, etc were actually *good*. That's why I like them.

I worked at a rental store back when the 3DO was new, and we carried virtually everything for the system. With my free rentals I was able to savor pretty much the entire library, and it really let me down. Samurai Showdown was pretty good, but just an inferior port of the Neo Geo original in the end. SSFIIX was good, but still not perfect.

The Jag was perhaps even a worse system in some ways. I never played any CD games, but the carts weren't that great. My favorite games on Jag are Tempest 2000, and Rayman but I have the Saturn versions of both of those games so the Jag is worthless to me. AvP, the game everyone says is so great, never did it for me because I f*cking loathe corridor games, and when my friend brought his Jag over earlier this week I found that the game wasn't even as impressive as it was back in the day. The unique thing about the Jag was how many outright f*cking horrible games it has. Wow. Defender 2000's original mode is OK (hilariously enough, not arcade percect) but the remix mode is retched. Club Drive is amazingly crap. Then you've got Fight for Life...man this system f*cking sucks. Even Yu Yu Hakushou on 3DO, which was certainly crap, is infinitely better than Fight for Life. Fight for Life is so bad that I litterally can't imagine anyone ever playing it and having fun with it except by mocking it, and there are many Jag games in that catagory.

Come to think of it, as bad as the 3DO is, its loads more fun than the Jag. 3DO had Return Fire (with Jeeps instead of the PS1's stupid Hummers), two good fighting games (now find two good controllers!), and Policenauts...yeah, the 3DO wins this one hands down, even if it was just an overpriced piece of junk designed to make Trip Hawkins rich. I see that on ataritimes.com the #1 ranked Jag title is the Virtual Light Machine. As cool as that thing is, its sad that its the favorite software. (ie: its more fun to play CDs in your Jag than it is to play games).

yeah, the jag's software was pretty sad. I remember being mildly interested in it when it came out, but after reading reviews in game mags (didn't realize how biased they were at the time) I lost all interest. I remember the reviews for club drive being especially bad; they called it the worst game on the system (and on a system full of crap, that's an accomplishment.)

The only person I ever knew who owned one (still does, to my knowledge) was my older cousin - she was nuts for tempest 2000.
