Power Strike does that "difficulty change" thing, too.  Makes me think the only hope of beating the game is not to shoot at anything except the bosses.

Yup, every Zanac game and Aleste 1 (Power Strike) have the on-the-fly difficulty change known as the Automatic Level of difficulty Control (ALC). But even with the ALC attacking you, if you have a fully powered Weapon0 you'll have unlimited shots and it will deflect bullets making the whole game broken. Doing this makes it easy to get 1CC's on Zanac (Nes/msx2) and Aleste (msx2/SMS). I say the msx1 version is much harder b/c you can't power-up the secondary weapons and the ALC is way more aggressive which forces players to rely on skills only.

What is weapon zero?  You mean the gimpy default weapon that I have to collect 6,172 P's to upgrade to two shots, and then 6,172 more P's to upgrade to three shots and so on and so forth?

What is a 1CC?  1 credit completion?  (Wild guess).

I didn't mean the main gun, but the secondary weapon that you begin with. The one that can shoots in 8 different directions.
