For me, that's especially true for certain genres. I can play a lot of old-school RPGs for the first time and still have fun with it, whereas old school racing games just don't cut it for me anymore - they're so much better now.
There's a very good reason for that...RPGs aren't as focused on the visual aspect of the game, whereas racing games are entirely visual. Also there's the mechanical issue...older racing games don't quite have the range of freedom that newer ones have (most old racers don't let you drive backwards on the track for example, this has been a mainstay in almost all 3D racing games for the past 10 years) .
