Yeah don't say anything bad about the Wii, its the savior of gaming!  The video game industry was in such dire straits before an underpowered gimmick-box whose only selling point is more sequels but this time with motion control came along to save it!
You'd be surprised how much more fun motion control can make a game :) .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Wow - Some people are a little defensive of the Wii.  Thank god it's only good for playing games.  Why would I want to look at pics, play movies, listen to music, go shopping, check the weather, surf the internet, check the news, or create avatars?  Oh wait, I can do all these things with my Wii.  I guess I was crazy wanting to be able to play movies off of a DVD and not just a SD.

PS - If I wanted an xbox, I would buy an xbox.  You know, from Microsoft - 'cause I love 'em.  :)

Yeah, but can the Wii play CD+G's or CD2 games?

I've played Wii Sports, Red Steal, Elebits, Call of Duty 3, and Zelda.  The only thing I was surprised by was how bad they all suck and how awful motion control is.

I could see how Red Steel and Call of Duty 3 (though I've never played it) could make someone see how motion control sucks (which I also thought at first, but after giving Red Steel more time, I learned to absolutely love the controls and it smokes mouses and analog sticks), but I can't see how motion control for Wii Sports or Zelda is anywhere near awful. Wii Sports utlizes the wiimote amazingly and feels fantastic and realistic to play while Zelda really doesn't use much motion control at all. Though I haven't played Elebits, all I hear about it is how well it controls. Seriously, I don't think you could play those games and honestly think the motion control was "awful" in them.

You know what I find funny, GUTS? The fact that you posted on Famiconsumer how you thought Nintendo's E3 for the Wii looked great and made you interested in it. But since you follow Nick Evil as if he were a prophet, you decide to agree with Nick's article which rambled on how the Wii sucks because it uses a sensor bar which means it won't work just like the Power Glove. Much to that article's surprise, the Wii DOES work and is far from being another Power Glove and in my opinion the wiimote has been doing a good job so far and it's only just touching the surface. I want to know how you went from becomming so interested in the Wii to hating it just because you honestly believed it would be another Power Glove?

Red Steal- one of the worst games ever made, easily, and controls like complete and total shit.  The aiming is so awful that I cannot even begin to fathom how anyone could say it "smokes a mouse".  Its slow, imprecise, and glitchy as f*ck.  For god's sake, they have to have a "lock on" feature the aiming is so bad, what FPS shooter has ever had to have a "lock on"?  Its laughable.

Wii Sports- fun for about 10 minutes.  Another one where the motion control is very imprecise and frustrating, take Golf for example.  Also all the games are mini games and have absolutely no depth at all.

Call of Duty 3- Same problems as Red Steal, the Wii controller is total shit for first person shooters and horrible to try and actually hit stuff with.  A mouse is infinitely better, and hell I'll even take a f*cking analog stick instead.

Zelda- Sucks shit to begin with after playing the vastly superior Okami, and the motion control at the expense of a controllable camera is weak.  Wow I can flick my f*cking wrist a little and link swings his sword, thats so much more fun and interactive than hitting a button!

Elebits- The motion control worked ok in this one, but it was boring as f*ck and got old by level 2.  If Red Steal and Call of Duty 3 had controlled as well as this one I might have had a better impression of the controller.

Besides, I also posted that the DS looked like shit, now I like it, big f*cking deal.  The Wii did look interesting at one point, but after the whole Virtual Console bullshit and playing an actual system, I hate it.  Simple as that.

Although I don't think that Zelda Wii's control is awful, I don't like the shaking/swinging to attack deal in particular. I'd probably have had more fun playing the Gamecube version, but received the Wii game as a gift before I even had a Wii system.

However good or bad the remote controls depends on each game's developer(and fully charged batteries).

I love the control/gameplay of Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, which alone makes my Wii worthwhile. But combined with my need for a new Gamecube, the easier to find + cheaper than GC component cables, Virtual Console with TG-16 games, Web Broweser/YouTube viewer, etc... it'll still be worthwhile for me if they stop making Wii games tomorrow.

In the meantime, I really want to try that arcadey off road racer.  :)

Elebits may not be fleshed out enough for us 'hardcore' gamers, but my girlfriend went ape shit over it, even more so than Viva Pinata. But you make the point that it's the games that suck, not the controller. Metroid should be the first decent fps.

I thought the same exact same thing when I first played it. However after giving the game more time and getting used to the controls, I can honestly say I'll take it over a mouse any day. Sure the controls aren't perfect still, but it's made by frickin Ubisoft, so what did you expect? However this time Ubisoft has actually really impressed me with Red Steel and I can only imagine how awesome the new Metroid Prime will be. The wiimote is certainly not to be blamed for Red Steel's control since the Wii menu screen controls the pointer perfectly.

I admit the Golf game took a little more time to learn how to play, but it doesn't take very long and when you do learn it, it's great, same with boxing. However Tennis and Baseball work perfect and I don't think you can deny that, GUTS. A game doesn't have to have depth to be fun, in fact simple is probably the best way to approach fun. Maybe you just need some friends to play with or something. Speaking of which, being the ladies man you are, I'm surprised you are not taking advantage of the Wii. The Wii is actually a system that girls will play and have fun with and I'm sure they'll love making Miis before going to bed with you.

I haven't played this game and I'm not interested since I hate these kind of games to begin with. Once again, it's Ubisoft I wouldn't have expected much to begin with.

I made a long post discussing Zelda here. Though the Wii version of Zelda barely utilizes the Wiimote (which isn't surprising since it was designed for Gamecube), I think the little touches it does with it does bring you into the game more than a pad would and makes it more fun that way.

You know when GUTS says the motion control worked "ok" in this one actually translates to "it's utterly amazing!" ;) . It looks like you proved to yourself that motion control isn't awful in this mini-review.

I finally have a Wii.  Now I can be as cool as you guys!  I have Wario Warez and Super Monkey Ball.  Wario Ware is pretty good as I like all Wario Ware games... well I liked the DS one, anyway.  I am a HUGE Super Monkey Ball fan and completed the previous 2 games with ease and had tons of fun.  I can honestly say that Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz would be a far better game if it were on any other system.  It is difficult to control with the WiiMote and almost impossible to make your monkey stay still.  It is very easy to find yourself constantly overcorrecting, especially since the WiiMote doesn't have a center reference.  The music is good, but I'm not sold on the jump button yet (might as well add a "jump" to Marble Madness).  And the inclusion of bosses is one of the most retarded things ever to happen during the entire existence of everything.  I'm on that pirate ship level now and it is teh ghey.  They also ruined Monkey Target.  Fags.

My 8 year old daughter plays the golf mini game fine. She usually always makes par or birdie on every coarse.
As far as Zelda goes I have no complaints as of yet. I don't play it that much however, mostly my son plays it. I can't really comment on any other game, but what I have played I found the remote to work fine on. It also helps if the sensor bar is set up properly and at the right height and that you set it up in the option menu. I noticed alot of people forget to do this, and after doing so they have no complaints.

You should try Marble Blast Ultra, or whatever it's called for Xbox Live Arcade. It's a Marble Madness'y SMB clone with a jump button.  :P

I took some adjusting for a while, but I love SMBBB as much as SMB2(I played 2 before 1 and can't get into the originator now). I think the jump button perfectly compliments the new control.

If you're having trouble keeping your monkey still and/or are still getting used to the controls, you might want to try playing as the big slow monkey. In general, I barely move the remote, although I know my first tendancy was to tilt it all over the place.  :)

I like the idea of boss battles, even though the ones in SMBBB are all over the place.

I find that the responsiveness deteriorates with the batteries, so I try to only play with near-full power battereies.

Well if the new Mario game actually turns out good instead of a major disappointment like nearly every Nintendo made game of the last 5 years, then I'll get a Wii.  I used to really like Nintendo back in the 90s, it wasn't until the Gamecube and how ultimate shitty its Mario and Zelda were that I started to really hate them (well along with connectivity, farming Mario out to 4 billion other companies, pasting Mario characters into every type of game known to man, refusing to accept HD as the future, etc).

In Marble Blast Ultra, you actually control the marble.  in Super Monkey Ball, you simply tilt the floor.  And how is a monkey in a ball supposed to jump?  The first Super Monkey Ball was the best (except for the lack of 16:9 and 480p).  The switches and other nonsense (like the story) they added to part 2 was stupid, but it didn't destroy the game.  Regardless, there should be an option to control the Wii game with the damned nunchuck or a Gamecube controller.  I would enjoy it 50 times more.
