Should Link have been shot in the head in Zelda 3?
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:12:14 PM »
The other day, a friend and I were talking about how Zelda 3 was such a monumental disappointment.  No one thing could've saved this mess: the lame enemies/bosses, junkyard-like overworld, and simple/repetitive puzzles added up to an unsalvageable disaster.  But the game could've at least featured a memorable moment that made it worth playing.

That moment could've been Link being shot and killed.

Imagine if this pudgy, unlikable hero was suddenly confronted by and blown to hell by some badass, and then you got to control the badass for the rest of the adventure.  That would've been cool, maybe even cool enough for me not to mind the aforementioned problems quite so much.

What do you think?

I think there's no accounting for taste.

I like Zelda III for what it is, but don't I think its one of the absolute greatest games ever made.

Of course, not only do I find most untouchable legendary titles grossly overrated, I think that all the 3D Zelda are total garbage(although Wind Waker had a few pieces of a decent game in it) and that Zelda TP shouldn't even be catagorized as an actual video game(instead of developing it for GC and porting it to Wii, they should've just slapped it on a regular DVD movie disc like Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, etc). :P

Aha, well at least you two (and GUTS) are exclusive to this opionion. Maybe some other people on this board as well, but everybody's severely skewed here.

Zelda 3 is one of the best games I've played, but I still don't consider it particuarly good compared to many other games in the series.

The Ultimate Zelda List of Perfection:
PERFECTION LIST
1. Majora's Mask
2. Ocarina of Time
3. Twilight Princess
4. The Adventure of Link
5. A Link to the Past
JUNK LIST
6. The Wind Waker
7. The Minish Cap
8. Oracle of Seasons
9. Link's Awakening
10. Oracle of Ages (here's a great example on how to make a truly abysmal game - but of course, it was developed bu... I won't even say it.)

You know, I misunderstood the topic of this thread. This thread is more about should Link have been shot in the head, not if you hate Zelda 3. In that case, yes I would've liked to seen that because that would've looked pretty cool, especially for a non-violent game. I'm a sucker for surprise endings and it's always great to see evil win for once.

My Zelda list:

1. ) Zelda II
2. ) Everything else

10. Oracle of Ages (here's a great example on how to make a truly abysmal game - but of course, it was developed bu... I won't even say it.)

-Perfection list-
Zelda II
Link's Awakening
Ocarina of Time
Minish Cap

-Junk list-
Every other Zelda game

And yeah I agree if something really awesomely gruesome had happened to Link in Zelda III, I might have enjoyed the game.

Wow, this board has such random crazy across the board opinions on stuff. I really do think most of you are just doing it to be contrary. I wonder how many of you truly appreciate the greatness of the PCE, and how many of you are just supporting what was basically the underdog system in the English speaking world just to be a pain in the ass.

Let me help you: "Super Mario Bros. controls like shit." That should troll up some internet discussion. You have my permission to use it at will.

Zelda 3 seems to be, from what I've seen, the most loved game in the series so calling it a disapointment is kind of...well, its an original statement, I guess. Its also insane. Considering they were coming from Zelda 2, which was utter f*cking crap, I'd say it was a huge success artistically. Even Zelda 1, IMO, was pretty lame, but then I don't really dig most FC software anyway. Eitherway I think it might be kind of out-of-context/revisionist to say Zelda 3 was a disapointment when the only other Zelda games were the two crusty-ass FC titles...and Neutopia, of course.

My favorites, without question, are Wind Waker, and Link's Awakening DX. I played these games full tilt to completeion loving them all the way. But then I really didn't like Ocarina at all, which is also very loved by people. To me it was so brown it could have been a Quake Gaiden. Also...I got lost. :(

I think the most "disappointing" Zelda game was probably Twilight Princess. Its even more brown than Ocarina.

What's wrong with Zelda II? No fights, just curious to hear why you don't like it (a lot of retro gamers seem to love Zelda II while more casual Nintendo gamers hate it).

It's my favorite game in the series since I love platform RPGs. In my opinion, Zelda II worked out much better as a Zelda sequel than Ys III did as a Ys sequel. The reason being that Zelda II still carries a lot of elements from the first game which makes it feel much more like a Zelda game, like items, music, art style, etc... Ys III on the otherhand, which I enjoy too, didn't quite work out as well as a sequel because it didn't have much in common with the first two games. The only thing Ys III really shared with I & II was the name, a couple of characters, and a few similar items. They're both great games, but Zelda II did a better job on continuing the series.

Zelda II was Acclaim's NES Rambo..... but worse.

otherwise:
I enjoyed most of the Zelda games, not to big of a fan of Links Adventure though.  Even had fun with Four Swords on the GC.  It was like Link to the past: ARCADE.

Hey I thought Rambo for NES was a kinda neat game, though a bit confusing!

Signofzeta nailed it. Exactly how I would put it. Except the Zelda II bit. It may not be like the other Zelda games, but it is still a neat game. At least to me, I love 2d action adventure games. Oh, and the LA/WW bit as well, I didn't enjoy many minutes of those games. They were just plain boring to me.

Also: How can a person like Neutopia but not Zelda?

I REALLY want to get into Wind Waker, but I just get so bored after the first dungeon. I've tried playing the game multiple times but I loose interest at the same spot. The graphics and music are great and I even like the storyline from what I know of it, but as soon as Link hits the water with that boat, I just have a hard time remaining entertained.
