Who buys a PS3 in order to play PS2 games? The people who own PS2 games most likely own PS2 systems already. Backwards compatibility sucks. I play all my PS1 games (like two of them) on a real PS1.

2 things.

-A lot of people will, because that allows them to only use one console for games from all 3. Less space used.
-At least in the US version, BC does not suck. They actually installed the Emotion Engine chip onto the board of the PS3. It has been said that the software solution for the EU systems will do the job fine. The reports that you are seeing are based on the 1.5 firmware, but the 1.6, that will be released on launch day, is what adds support for all of the BC-enabled titles.

Also, look at the difference in sheer numbers of titles supported in BC between the PS3 and the 360. The PS3, reported to support 1200+ initially, the 360 after being out for over a year, what, 250'ish titles.

When I worked at an EB years ago, and the SNES was coming out, 9 times out of 10, the first question asked was "will it play the games for the NES?"

We, as gamers may not care much about BC, but a LOT of parents and under-informed consider it a very big deal.

Its true. I'd buy a PS3 if it ran original TG-16 chip and CD games.

For you guys with a PS3, can you actually do anything interesting with Linux or is it pretty much worthless?  Like I mean does a program that runs through linux have access to the PS3's full power or are they crippled in some way so that we'll never see any cool games, media players, or emulator ports?

So other than the size of the hard drive, what is the difference between the super-cheap $500 PS3 that everyone hates and the mega-expensive $600 PS3 that everyone says is the only one to get if you aren't a complete and useless loser who is a disgrace to humanity?  Is it the wireless network (which I do not have nor ever plan to have in my house)?  Is it the ability to accept flash cards (I do not see how this could be useful unless someone could explain a way that it could enhance my entire life)?  Does it lack HDMI (that would be a big reason not to get it).  I don't mind being a disgrace to humanity by getting the $500 version if it does have HDMI.  I imagine I'd probably own less than 15 games over the entire life of the console (same goes for my Wii and Xbox360... both are f*cking boring so far with only a few good games).

The differences between the 2 models are:

On the 60GB model, you get:

*Bigger Hard Drive
*Internal Wireless
*Multi-Card reader (which has been more useful than I expected)
*Chrome Trim

Both models have HDMI

Also, it's incredibly easy to replace the hard drive with a larger capacity drive, and it doesn't void the warranty.

Linux works quite well, but they haven't gotten good video drivers yet. All of the Linux-based emulators that I have tried have worked very well so far.

The $500 model is in no way useless. Sure, most people use wireless Internet nowadays, but other than that - it can do anything the other model can. You can put in any SATA 2,5" HDD in the PS3, so you can put a 300 GB drive in there or whatever. The thing has USB ports, so you can insert any $5 card reader in there, no need for integrated ones. Oh yeah, you can use wifi USB dongles as well.

At this point, I think there are three different Linux distributions for the PS3. Of course, there are plenty of media players and stuff that works just fine on it.

Damn I really want a $500 one now, I didn't know you could upgrade the hard drive like that, plus I HATE chrome.  I've been hoping I could find someone on craig's list who needed to seel theirs for meth money, but no luck so far, everybody on there still seems to think they're worth more than retail.  Heavenly Sword and Lair keep looking cooler and cooler everytime I see a new preview, plus I know a couple years down the line the system will probably have quite a few kickass action games like the PS2 did.

Wow, this thread went on without me :P

I'm playing through MotorStorm right now as well - I love the game, mostly because the 360 has nothing even close to off-road racing (the Xbox 1 Rallysport 2 was awesome but does not run on the 360.)  Sega is bringing the new Sega Rally to the PS3, so I'm really looking forward to that one.

I'm also looking forward to running Folding@Home on the PS3 as well.  The PS3 client is very well done and reports say that it can crunch 10x+ more than any new PC right now.  The client shows you in real-time who is running the PS3 client on the 3D map in the background.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
