The SMS is worth it just for Missile Defense 3-D.  I hate lightgun games usually, but Missile Defense 3-D is all kinds of rad.

The SMS has an awesome design, I don't know what you guys are talkin' about.  The whole play button diagram on the front alone makes it kickin' rad!

agree. but i like the mark III design the most. the sms got some rad games which would never be possible on a FC in technical point of view. the sms had a great colorpalette as well, which let the games look much more closer to arcade-like as any other 8-bitter in that time.
just playing r-type and aleste at the moment, and they're amazing. especially together with the japanese FM sound.

The end boss in Segagaga for the Dreamcast where the Mark III comes in and the FM unit slaps onto it and you can see the excessive amounts of power flowing from it is AWESOME!

Why didn't Japan get any of the light gun games?  They got 3D games, right?  I know Mark Cerny was at least partly responsible for the creation of the 3D glasses.

yes the 3D-glasses came out here (which are fu**ing expensive nowadays) . and the JPN SMS already contains the 3D-glasses adaptor, which the oversea version didn't.

I wonder what would happen if you plugged in the USA 3D glasses adapter into the card slot of the Japanese SMS?  Would they both work, would one take take priority over the other or would the system explode?

I've wondered the same thing since I got my first Mark III SMS, but still haven't bothered to pick up the damn 3D glasses. Once I do get the glasses, I should be able to test it out since I have a U.S. SMS to Mark III converter and can just run a U.S. 3D cart.

My favorite SMS design would have to be the Master System Girl.  What can I say, I like pink!

Seriously, the original SMS has the best design.  I can't love the SMS without a card slot.

Master system girl / super compact is awful. Good idea but really horrible to play on - it's just too big, and playing 2 player can just be annoying as the 2nd player joypad is effectively connected to your own controller (the system itself!).

Have to repeat what others have said about the game library - anyone who says it's limited obviously doesn't know anything about the system. I have around 300 unique games many of which are simply brilliant.

Great link. Now call me crazy, but I actually thought some NES games looked better than the SMS versions on that page! I'm not going to argue though about which console is more powerful, that's an obvious winner for SMS :P .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Yeah, although that is an entertaining page, they used some bad examples if they were trying to be biased towards SMS.

It should be common knowledge to non-1up.com/EGM editors that the SMS is a big step above NES visually in the right hands.

But that doesn't mean the NES isn't capable of nice graphics in its own right.

I think that despite it's lower vertical resolution that the SMS has better graphics overall than the NES.  The games usually have much more detail and bolder colors.  Try playing NES Fantasy Zone for a half an hour.  Now plug in the SMS version.  OH MY!  However I think the NES has better sound than the SMS. Of course that's not to say that the SMS didn't have tons of enjoyable sound and music.

I haven't played the NES version of Fantasy Zone, but that was one of the games in that page kungfukid posted that I thought looked better on NES. Of course I would have to see it in game though :) . Altered Beast on SMS is like lightyears ahead of the NES on the other hand.

I noticed that Fantasy Zone comparison as well.  I have the game here and believe me there is zero comparison, especially the way the game moves.  Perhaps I should post an awesome video comparison!  The Sega Master System version has Blast Processing.
