My friend had me mod his top loader Nes system for composite video and dual mono audio out. Here are the results.





Some pics of it running,pretty good quality. Looks much better in person on the tv. Tv used is a Sony Wega 36 inch.

After the mod the composite was perfectly fine,no interference. The pics on here look like there is,but its actually just the typical probs cams have with taking pics off of tvs. Now on the RF side of things,after doing the mod the RF got a tad worse and is prone to a tad more interference we think,or ugly at least. At any rate it wouldn't matter because the Rf was inferior to the current composite mod in the first place.

Ummm... what's so special about an NES in composite?  I know the NES2 doesn't have that built in, only RF, so the composite mod would bring it all the way up to the level of the real NES.  If you want to impress me, find a way to get true RGB out of that thing without needing to get new graphics chips... and have the RGB come out the back side of the unit instead of the side (I don't like wires coming from the sides of my game consoles).

Ahh yes,well he doesn't want a Nes 1,so he is pretty happy with the Nes 2,esp after the composite mod. The space is pretty limited in the back for good high quality gold plated jacks. I could have done them there,but it would have had to have been in the spot where the repair line sticker is,which my friend did not wish to do,so he chose the side of the unit. Tapping actual RGB of the current hardware in the unit,alas,to my knowledge is impossible. Its a pain as it is to tap composite off the hardware as you have to build  a amp for it and remove a resistor,cut a trace,ect ect. It was not just a simple task of drilling 3 holes and soldering the jacks directly to the PCB.. The video chip does not produce it I have read everywhere. Otherwise,instead of a composite mod I would have been doing something like a RGB to NTSC encoder mod for s-video or component for this person.

Hey Mike you obviously do some good work on these mods, how much do you charge to do S-Video or RGB on a Genesis and Turbo Duo?  If you don't do them, do you know anybody who does?  I need to send mine off soon and get them modded.

Guts,id have no real problem doing the Duo one for s-video/component,but what you would need to purchase a encoder for this from Jrok and some panel mount jacks. Before doing so,email him asking about what additionally needs to be added to the encoder to get it to work perfectly with the TurboDuo. I remember there being issues about the video sync line or something maybe,so he would need to clarify this and the fix. I know he sells  a sync cleaner thing for 10 bucks extra,and that does wonders for helping getting certain arcade game boards to sync correctly on certain tvs. I already know where to tap the needed RGB from the HUC6260A on the Duo,so as I said,just need the other info clarified from Jrok.

As far as Genesis decks go,the same applies. I can do a s-video mod on a Genesis 2 deck for sure if it is a MK-1451 deck,and a Genesis 3 any type of deck. This is actually a very easy mod and does not require me to build a amp or anything,just a couple of caps,and resistors,and some panel mount jacks. Older genesis one decks,yea,more likely then not if they are from the first couple of releases,as long as they have the Sony 1145 chip. However,really I detest the Genesis 1 S-video mod,its,to me,not up to par with the quality gained from the Genesis 2 MK-1451 and Genesis 3 decks quality. I think Black Tiger is looking around right now for  a MK-1451 deck or  a Genesis 3 for me to mod.

My Genesis I use is a Mk-1451. I don't play it all the time,but when I want to just sit and play Streets of Rage 2,or my jp cart of Strider,its great. I had  a Genesis 3 deck modded but sold it on ebay since I did not need 2 of them.

As far as prices,as long as you cover parts prices and shipping back and forth,I would charge prob $15 for the Duo mod,and for the Genesis 2  Mk-1451 or Genesis 3 $10 for sure. Genesis 1 deck I guess I would do,however I am not eager to do so. On it I would charge around $20.00. Seriously though,if your dead on wanting the best image quality out of the Genesis s-video wise,go for a MK-1451 or Genesis 3. They use the better Sony CX1645 chip.

Yea,its the Pioneer CLD-504 I sold him a couple of years ago. I think hes finally getting ready to buy a demodulator for the AC-3 audio output. I think the dvd player is his Philips that plays Divx.

OK being serious now... the jacks shouldn't "wear out" no matter if they are gold, silver or aluminum.  Also, unless you used gold plated solder and wire internally straight from the video chip (which would need gold plated legs for you to tap the signal from), it's all for naught as if it ain't gold, it's shit (kidding about that part, of course).  I am a video quality whore, and I've never noticed an onscreen difference between silver RCA jacks and gold ones.  I don't buy into the whole Monster Cable™ gold plated evaporated etc etc nonsense.  I'm sure it does help the signal in some small way over really long runs, though.
