Opinions about the new Ys games?

Ok, Seldane, already know your answer, cuz you're wierd.  Especially since you like the weakest game of the 3 the most!  Anyways, the 3 games are Ys 6 Ark of Napishtim(the weakest of the 3), Ys: Oath in Felghana(complete overhaul of the Ys 3), & Ys Origin(basically, Ys Zero, everything that happened 700 years ago in Ys). 

My personal opinion, is that they rock.  For Ark of Napshtim, it's a good start, it's a great game, & it explains where various things, come from, like what the Black Pearl is, & what Galbalan is.  It ties most into Ys 3 I'd say.  But, I like Ys 1 & 2, & 4 more then anyother Ys games.  However, that changed once they released Oath in Felghana!  Fantastistic game that sucks you in, even if you're not a fan of the series(as I now have made new fans of the series ), short, like every Ys game, but sweet the entire way thru, & explains alot more about Ys 3 & ties more into the rest of the series!  And, the soundtrack, I've decided is ultimately better then Ryo Yonemitsu's version we got with our Turbo CD Ys 3.  And lastly, Ys Origin, which I played thru with Yunica Tobah, & am now playing thru it as Hugo Fact.  And, it's just a fantastic game, & even though it's still in japanese, I'm understanding more about Ys, Eldeen, the goddesses, etc.  And it probably has my favorite Ys soundtrack ever!  Especially a certain final boss song, with uh, I don't want to spoil. 

Oh, & to clarify, THEY ARE NOT 3D!  They are 2D, or 2.5D if you want to get techical!  They are still overhead view, with sprites, that's right, sprites(with exception to the PS2 version of Ark), the scenery is both poly's & tiles, but just cuz' there's lot's of poly's in it, DOESN'T make them 3D!  They play like our old beloved Turbo Ys games, but with sword slashing combo's!  And I'm not talking like the simple gameplay of Ys 5(for those who hate that game, though, it's a good game, ask Seldane ), it's alot more then that, it's beyond that.  The main thing is, you should give them a chance.  And, even if they were 3D, who cares, as long as they're fun!   Well, unless they were FPSS(First Person Sword Slashing), can't imagine that working, but, anyhoo, those are my opinions.  And I thank the Turbo for getting me started on the Ys series, becuase it's now better then ever!

I haven't played any of the newer Ys games yet, but they look pretty damn good to me.  I'll grab 'em if I ever get the chance to pick 'em up at a good price.

I can't really say much since Ys VI is the only newer Ys game I have played. Unfortunately I was disappointed with Ys VI, especially since I thought the first trailer for it looked beyond awesome. I found the story to be flavorless, dull characters, and weak music compared to the others. The new combat system was really fun and as usual, the boss fights were teriffic! So I might end up liking the other new ones a lot if the battle system is similar and if the story and music is better.

Sorry, but the story is much worse in the other two. I don't personally like the music in the other two games, and I find the music in Ys 6 terrific, but others will probably disagree with me as always.

First, the PSP version of Ys 6, isn't the version to get, the PS2 version is alot better, don't recall any load times in the PS2 version, however, the PS2 version has new poly models for all the characters.  As for the music & story, ultimately I like both in Ys 6, but, the other 2 absolutly blow Ys 6 away.  Ys 6 was just a begining to what revived the series, & especially on the music side, Oath in Felghana & Origin rule!  And ultimatly, as I said before, including Ys 6, the stories of all these games really explain alot more about Ys, Eldeen, the Black Pearl, etc.  So, I'm in love with them

I downloaded the Ys Origins soundtrack that was offered here and I started to listen to it.  It sucked.  It was mostly just rearrangements of Ys 1 tunes.  Ys has been arranged waaaaaaaaaaaay too many times, and none of them even come close to what Ryo Yonemitsu did with the Turbo version.  The Oath in Felahangnnauga does NOT have better music than Ys III for the Turbo.  Some aspects of it here and there are better and the overall soundtrack is very good, but Ryo Yonemitsu still wins.

Has Taito gone out of business yet?

I was on the fence about Ys Origin's soudtrack, before I got the game, but, after playing the game, I absolutly LOVE that soundtrack!  And, I think there's only about 5 songs that are from Ys 1 & 2, that are in Origin.  Off the top of my head, they'd be, Shadow of the Tower of Death, Feena, Termination(which is the BEST version of Termination, with a chorus, & violin & guitar, it pep's me up real quick after a hard days work!), Devil's Wind, So Much For Today, Last Moment of the Dark, & that's it.  If you really want to stretch it, you could say Memory of Salmon(Solomon) is as well, but, same tune, different pace, etc, more of a reflection of the original song, which is the purpose of it.  And that's out of almost 40 tracks, 6 of them being remakes, damn good remakes!

As for Oath in Felghana, I'm a big Ryo fan, as alot of my stuff, where appropriate, has a sound similar to his(though nowhere near as good), but, Felghana's soundtrack gives me goosebumps!  Actually, I think some of the songs in Oath, & the instruments used, are inspired by Ryo's previous work on it.  The only song, I'd maybe say I still like better of Ryo's, is the first leve's music, the name escapes me at the moment, but, I think I ultimately love Ryo's version better on that song, but the other's, there's almost no comparison.  They did a bang up job on it!

Oh, & on Ys 6 for PS2, there is an added bonus level thing Konami included.  It's nothing special, but, it's cool, also, there's voice acting.  Now, some people love the voice acting in it, & other's hate it.  There might be a few who think the voice acting is just ok.  I love it, but, then again, I'm biased, as I'm particular to some of the voice actor's used, like Scott McNeil, he's one of the more talented voice actor's out there!

I think I heard two versions of Feena when listening to the first few tracks of Origins.  It was on in the background as I worked and I only got about 7 songs into it before I shut it off.  I take it the first 7 or so aren't the best?  I sure hope not.  Where is this chorus song you speak of (disc and track)?

The Oath in Whatever soundtrack (that is a really lame name for a game, BTW) is definitely a good one, but whatever the snow mountain song is, I like the Ryo version MUCH better.  The Oath song that I like probably 5 to 10 times more than the Ryo version is Beat of Destruction.

The sprites look like shit in Ys 6, the poly models are way better and blend with the environment without that unnatural look you get when you put 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds.   PS2 version is the way to go.

Ys Origin is shit. Period. Easily the worst game of 2006. Beware.

And yeah, GUTS is right. Those horrible blurry sprites used in the PC versions are awful and a big factor to why those games suck so much. Fortunately, they removed them in the PS2 version, which is great except for the mad loading times.

Unfortunately, Taito is still in business, and they're still torturing us with more and more abysmal games. Hopefully they'll go bankrupt soon.
