Dungeons & Dragons Collection - your thoughts?
« on: April 15, 2007, 04:58:20 AM »
Ive been threatening to get this game (for the Saturn) for a while now. Do any of you own it? What are your thoughts on it?

Also, for those of you familliar with arcade stuff, how hard is it to find the original arcade boards/carts for D&D:Tower of Doom and/or D&D:Shadow over Mystara?

Old vid I made of the Saturn Tower of Doom almost a year ago.

Loading between stages is my slightest beef though.

If you're a fan of beat 'em ups and like to play them over again and again, then you'll love this set.

I never had a problem with the load times back in the day.

I first got it when it was released.  A great value at the time.  (I dunno what they go for these days).

It kicks ass.  I wish there weren't unlimited continues, though.  It can make one lazy and just blow through the thing.

I heard complete copies go for quite a bit on ebay, but not in my case. Back in summer of 2000 I got mine for 10 bucks complete from Gamestop when it was called "Funcoland" and they sold games for all retro system. For some reason, several locations I used to frequent had Saturn imports, particularly Capcom.

D&D collection good on the saturn but it's loading times are annoeying.

Beside lacking the 4p suport kind of sucks.

Never under stoood why, Capcom left that out when the console has a multitap begin with.

I still hope one day... it will showup in a collection again but that's a millon to one chance for that to happen.

Afther all there's the matter of a lincense fee  :P

Not that i regert getting it for the saturn on it's launch.

It's just it could have been more.

Still one of my favorite hack'n'slash games next to golden axe.

I'm guessing that 2 players already eat up enough ram or maybe even that they could've pushed 3 players, but figured 2 would seem weird if they couldn't squeeze in 4.

D&D Collection is awesome because Shadow Over Mystara is my favorite 2D beat-em-up game!  :D With that said, I think it's worth picking up.  However, it's kinda pricey.

Only having 2P kinda sucks, but I usually play solo anyways.  IIRC, the Saturn version is based off the bug-fixed arcade but I'm not sure if there are actually any differences between the Saturn and that arcade version.  Unfortunately, the bugs in the arcade made the game even better... except for the invincibility/all items bug.  That ruined the game entirely... and it would crash the machine.

Unlimited continues kinda ruins the fun too.  I can 1cc with every character, so I don't use continues anyway... that's the challenge. :)  Also, the game keeps track of the items you've found.  Don't remember what happens when you get them all, but I don't think it's anything special.  However, there's no way to get all the items on one play anyway.

Tower of Doom is alright.  I think it's harder than SoM, but that's mostly because the controls suck IMO.

As for the arcade boards, I remember seeing a number of them (especially Tower of Doom) in Akihabara the last time I was there (Sept 06).  I was actually specifically looking for the SoM board (about ~$150... maybe a little less).  Maybe one of the Tokyo forum members could help you out.

I just bought a Shadow over Mystara board on ebay for $150 a few months ago, but the f*cker sent me the Japanese one even though his auction stated it was the english version.  It's definitely one of my favorite games ever.
