Virtual console seems to ease my collecting habbit a bit.
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:36:18 AM »
Still not an owner of a Wii but since i wanted to buy Gunstar Heroes and R-Type III on ebay and lost the auction i don't seem to care that much as they are on the Wii!!!
At least on the European list.
Not the same as having the original but as some titles even plays a bit better as the the original version (definitely better then the pal version with a weak signal from console to TV) it saves me money for something else.

Also some of the arcade compilations out there like midway,taito,... i have now on ps2 made me sell my original games like gauntlet on the nes, mortal kombat 2 on genesis,... because they are better on the compilations (not all are better though).
Still, some games like Ghouls n' Ghosts on the genesis... I just can't bring myself to sell them even i though i have them on the capcom generations compilation.
Must be because they were significant in gaming history and bring the most nostalgia from the early days. :)

Downloading games for free and playing them on an emulator on a PC is better than virtual console. The emulation isn't crap, the picture doesn't suck, it's not buggy, it's not extremely expensive and you aren't forced to use a bad controller. Damn, I hate virtual console. I just can't understand why people are actually using it. I find it shocking.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I'm green around my ears regarding emulation and found the roms on dreamcast disappointing.
On genesis the sound is harsh and snes noticeable slowdown.
Nes was more then ok. :)
Can't stand the hassle on PC (while seeing a mate of mine struggling on it's PC and getting his controller setup), it gives me a headache and it's just not the same on a PC while you can sit on your sofa on the big screen.
But i'm a busy bee and it happens that at the moment i'm looking out for xbox emulation.
Will get software installed by someone but i bet it will be sometime before i can relax and start playing the things i want to play.
Spending to much time finding and searching things out and less playing.
When does it gonna stop!

Novelty, my friend, novelty ;) .

I admit it appeals more to the casual gamers that see an easy way to play those games.

I guess some people like to stay on the right side of the law - the poor, dumb bastards.  Not to mention that a television is often preferable to a computer monitor (depending upon your setup), especially for multi player gaming.

VC gives you no control over how the game is emulated. 9 times out of 10, the game is going to look and sound like it was originally released.

That's fine for most people, but how about people like me, who run with AA in the highest resolution with sound at the highest sample rate?

Not to mention I can have any game I want. It's not the matter of "I don't want to pay for the games", quite the contrary, I would pay a reasonable price for my games. However, Nintendo is slow at releasing games, and third-party games are hardly ever released.

Also, I mainly play single player, if I play multiplayer, it's netplay. So a monitor is just fine for me.

I'll probably get a laptop down the road, but as of now my PC is just fine for playing emulated games.

I used to hate virtual console too, But I have found out that it is really great for people who aren't into computer emulation and or collecting. I don't own a wii, but I think its an alright machine. I think that all in all, releasing old titles on virtual console will help those companies to want to make new games.

Yeah, horrible 3D sequels and remakes that tarnish the reputation of the original and disappoint old-school gamers.

Oh quit being a baby, you know you would love to see a new sequel come out for a classic franchise no matter how crappy it turns out. A new sequel could ruin the reputation of the original game, but who cares? Just ignore it and continue enjoying the original game.

Uhh, no offense, but that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. I HATE it when companies mess with my favorite franchises...that's why I'm not really happy about NiGHTS 2.

1) the emulation is not crap. The only real problem I've seen is Military madness, and they fixed it. The 'picture' is just fine.
2) $5 to $10 is not expensive, much less extremely, by any stretch of the imagination.
3) the controller is awesome, wether you're using the wiimote or the classic controller.
4) given the chance, most people don't want to be crooks. That's why people use it.

But not good enough. PC emualtion lets me see EVERY pixel in resolutions that rival 720p. Sound is better than ever, and can you rip game tracks directly from the game's code and put them on your MP3 player? I don't think so.

2) $5 to $10 is not expensive, much less extremely, by any stretch of the imagination.

$10 for a f*cking near 20-year old game!? That not f*cking expensive!? Oh wait, I forgot, you guys dropped $20 for less than stellar GBA emulations of actually 20-year old NES games.

3) the controller is awesome, wether you're using the wiimote or the classic controller.

Whether you can use both of those or not, I still prefer my Saitek Rumble Force P2500.

4) given the chance, most people don't want to be crooks. That's why people use it.

Maybe in 1812....

5) bite me.

I'm sure no one likes seeing a good franchise getting a cheap sequel, but as long as you still have the original game, what does it matter? You can relive all of your fond memories by playing the old game over and over again and just forget about a stupid sequel a company might make. And as far as NiGHTS 2 goes, I can't see how you wouldn't be happy since with the little info released so far, it looks to resemble the first one very much.
