Megami Tensei series
« on: May 26, 2007, 07:41:12 PM »
Since I'm almost done with Fu'un Kabuki Den, I've been brave enough to pick up some of my other import RPG's I haven't played much of yet. Earlier today I was tinkering around with Shin Megami Tensei II on my Super Famicom and was enjoying that a bit.

Anyone like the MegaTen series, particularly the old ones before the Persona subset? I understand some of those games are pretty raw as far as religion goes.

The only one I played was MT: Devil Summoner 2 for the Saturn.  The story definitely seemed rather interesting.  I got about half-way into the game, and my RAM cart decided to take a dump on me.   I haven't had the heart to start from scratch again since then.

I think this particular game was really something where I would've enjoyed it a LOT more enjoyable if I got 100% of the storyline.  Though I could get bits and pieces of what's going on, I really wanted to know the whole details, because the whole story seemed quite intricate and interesting, unlike the typical "save the princess, save the world/universe blah blah".

Uhwell, maybe I'll give it a go after I become fluent in Japanese... who knows when that's going to happen...  #-o

I used to play The Last Bible 1-2 on Sega Game Gear. Pretty cool games. I like that there are so many games related to this "series", and the story seems to be awesome in every single one of them.

I've always hated the art style- everybody looks like mannequins with lipstick on, and everyone is ultra scrawny.  Plus the stories aren't anything special once you get past the angels vs demons and religious imagery, they're just typical RPG stories, hell Constantine had a better story than any Shin Megami game I've played (and I've tried them all for some reason, I don't know why I keep giving the series another chance).

I played pretty far through one of the SFC RPG's, I think its called "if..."

It was fun enough, but the language barrier kept me from really delving into the seemingly deep gameplay system(s), with the whole demon capturing/summoning type stuff. Its basically a dungeon crawler, so taking full advantage of the game's system(s) is the main feature.

I'm pretty sure that I tried the PCE & Mega-CD games and that they were pretty much the same as that SFC game.

If you're up to it, its playable. But probably not nearly as much fun as several other PCE RPGs that you might not have played.

If you haven't played Neo Metal Fantasy I can't recommend it enough. Its one of the very best PCE RPGs and is very gaijin friendly with Shining style animated icons for the battles.

Oh yeah, if you're where I think you are in Kabukiden, you're actually only about half way through.

BT: I'm currently in Gort's Mansion, beat the Chimera and did the driller. But I didn't save cause it was actually a practice run to make a video for it later on.

Not all of them were dungeon crawlers though. DDS MegaTen 2 on the Famicom (and remade on the SFC) has its share of dungeon and top view.

I actually figured that you'd cleared that area by now. So you're just about half way through now.  :)

Yeah, I've tried quite a few Megami Tensei's, including the SFC war sim. But that one "if" game was very similar (1st person battles and 3D dungeons) to the MCD and SCD versions from what I remember.
