Looking for the name of an arcade game

Figure it's worth asking here.

There is a game I recall from the arcades. It is difficult for me to place when this game was released (late 80's, early 90's), however I would have to overshoot and say it was released no later than 1993.

What i recall about the game, was it was at least 2 players, possibly 4. It was somewhat fantasy based, but a sidescrolling action type game. Graphics were early 90's, late 80's. it had powerups enemies would drop.

The only level I recall involved walking into a castle/tower. Once inside, you climbed this spiral staircase, with the edge of the tower scrolling in the background as you climbed the "stairs". After a while a dragon, or some flying creature starts becoming visible through the windows you pass during your climb. Eventually, you reach the dragon, etc, etc. I didn't hang aroudn that game much,a s there was a crowd, and other folsk were already ahead of me ready to dump in their change shoudl one of the other players feel like dropping out.

I can't recall what this game was, however it was pretty popular when I saw it and had quite a crowd wathcing the other players. Upon returning to that arcade, I found the game was gone. This arcade was on the small side, it had 40 games or so, and would rotate them often unless it was a big money maker.

I never caught the name of this game.

I've looked through the KLOV site, and not found any leads. Definately not Cadash.

Any help is appreciated.

Was it Dungeons and Dragons - Tower of Doom or any other D&D games for CPS2?

It could be this game, King of Dragons http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8313  however it does not fit with the side scrolling I recall on the stairs, which was more like Legenday Axe type stuff, with no ups and downs, however prior to entering the tower movement may have been more free.

It's been 15 years or so, memory isn't too clear.

Still, any guesses may help me arrow this down!


I notice your reply, keranu. I'll look into that game also. the thing it, the only part that si pretty clear is one particular level, and the really nice scrolling effect.

If it is King Of Dragons, I'd want to point out that the game has a WONDERFUL SNES port that is entirely worth checking out.

I'm pretty sure it is Magic Sword. It's difficult for me to say without seeing that specific level I recall, however this looks right!

I found a recording online of someone playing through the KoD. I fast forwaded to the boss fights, I didn't see anyhting like I recalled.

Magic Sword seems to be about climbing a tower, so it would make sense. Plus the way the enemy drops a power up, and something about those locked doors seems familiar.

I notice this game is available on Capcom Classics volume 2 for PS2. Games like this, and KoF XI may make me pick up a system sometime. I can't stand the PS2 controller though, I'd have to own a stick to use that system, haha.

I think the Capcom Classics are freeplay also, not a set amount of lives. Anyone confrim that?

There is a Neo·Geo clone stick out for PS2...pretty damn good to boot.

magic sword is the first game that came to mind for me based on what you were saying, damn i love that game!

Ahh i was right about it being Magic Sword then kewl.

I used to pump alot of quarters into it back in the early 90's.

As for the free play on, CCC1&2 you can set the amount of continues any you want to.

Btw useing a regular controller on a ps2 can be a pain for older 2d games.

Still the option there is to use a (PS2 Saturn pad) or a joystick like the ones hori provide.

Lately, I've been tracking down a few video games I recall, some from arcades and such. This particular game had me stumped.

I'm 90% sure it's this game, as the first level looks about right. The way the enemy drops coins is very familiar. The stage with the spiral staircase, and a dragon boss may be a 15 year, hazy memory, and not be quite as I recall.

That's cool about the continues. I didn't know if it was the type where they set the continues at a certain number, and that's it. I dislike that, as in an arcade I would be dropping quarters/tokens into the machine 'til I conquered it, became bored, had to leave, or ran out of coins.

Hmm i don't know about Asciiware ones unless you mod them and swap them with arcade parts.

I hear the hori ones for the PS2 are good but very expensive.

Kit, I've seen them before, but not seen any for sale when I was looking around at PS2 stuff this afternoon. Very nice, though.

I'm not sure if the Asciiware PS1 controllers would work with Capcom Classics 2. If they don't, then I will broaden my search for that controller.

I rented that game years ago.  It was pretty good but a LOT of the animations from the arcade weren't present probably due to memory issues.  I also think some of the violence got toned down in that version as well as to satisfy Nintendo's strict censorship policies back then.

I also want to say that Magic Sword is also a great game to play! I never tried out the SNES version yet but I did try a bit of the game on the Capcom Arcade Classics Vol. 2 game compilation for the PSP.  Great stuff and really HARD! The game gets absolutely crazy by the 5th floor I believe!
