I was arguing with Nödtveidt's post (I assumed by "real RPG" he meant "American").
Don't ever assume. It makes an ass out of U. :P

I wasn't referring to American RPGs, and besides, I rarely, if ever, use the word "American". I was referring to REAL RPGs, not these half-baked excuses we tend to get these days, even from the Japanese developers.

You will hate the RPG that we have produced. It's pretty much all about leveling, since that's how the original PC game was. However, it's not "American" (meaning USA) in origin...it's Canadian in origin. So...all Canadian RPGs must automatically suck, right?

Guys, Korean RPGs is where all the leveling is tedious.  Have you ever played those free online RPGs like Maple Story and Silkroad? You need to have the patience of a saint to sit through all that. [-(

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

MMORPGs in general are all about leveling. I've yet to find a decent MMORPG aside from RuneScape where the basis was not about leveling. I follow a very simple rule when it comes to MMORPGs: I look at the user forum for the game, and if I even ONCE see the word "mob" being used, then I know it's a crap game.

I like the old text based MUD RPGs where it was more about team work with finding your way around dungeons.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Americans make awesome RPGs.  With the exception of Chrono Trigger, some Final Fantasies, and any RPG Sega ever made, I personally like western style RPGs way more than Japanese RPGs.

And XBOX developers.

Lemme just run down some titles:

Baldur's Gate
Elder Scrolls (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind,Oblivion, etc...)
Shadowrun
Septerra Core
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Mass Effect
Sudeki (It's British actually, but it still counts, even though the design goal was to be as Japanese as possible)
Might & Magic series
Secret Of Evermore (although this was dictated by Square to play HIGHLY Japanese)
Dungeons & Dragons series

Basically, any RPG that cares more about the leveling than anything, has an OVERLY medieval or futuristic setting, and is just tedious and boring to play? That's an American-as-apple-pie RPG.

Fallout is the exception to this.

Baldur's Gate for PC or console? I liked Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. That was a kick-ass hack and slash fest. I liked the 'drop' system in the game. Hmmm...rare drops. The sequel was boring though. The first one had really cool story development to compliment the hack-n-slash fest and expansive weapon/armor inventory. The sequel was blah.

Also, shadowrun for the SNES was cool. Weird, but cool. It was a refreshing break from the same old RPGs at the time.
