The official Japanese Sega Mega Drive 6-button controllers are smaller than the US version.  I think they have a blue start button.

Are they the same as the CDX controllers? This controller that came with my bro's CDX had a blue start button.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

This is the official US 6-button controller.  If it has rapid fire on it, then it is the Majesco controller, even if it only has the Sega logo on it.  The Majesco controllers are dogshit.

Here's a Japanese 6-button controller (very worn as you can see by the near-missing writing).  It was the only picture I could find on the internet in my exhaustive 45-second search.  Again, no rapid fire at all.  The MODE switch on both the US and Japanese version is where the "R" shoulder button would be on other controllers.

The Japanese controller is made for the minuscule hands of the Japanese population whereas the US controller is made for the giant manly hands of US people.  I think Microsoft took it too far when they made their original Xbox controller.  Same goes with Nintendo for the Wii.  The damn remote could be bigger as my giant manly hand begins to hurt after while.

Well the 6-button controller looks like a major improvement over the original pack-in controller.  :)

Note to self: Buy a 6-button controller when I get a Genesis.

Haha. I didn't mind either actually. But I definitely prefer the smaller version. But either of those are infinitely better than the PS controllers. The PS controller must be one of the worst designed controllers, especially for a pack-in. The analogue sticks are so awkward to use. But there are people who love them obviously so...

I missed this thread before but I guess I can add my $.02 worth now to the original post...despite the obvious fanboyism in the thread title.

Genesis games in alphabetical order:
Castle Of Illusion - Good platformer
Chakan - Good gameplay but shitty sound
Phantasy Star IV - No rivals in the 16 bit era
Shining In The Darkness - One of the best battle themes for an RPG
Sonic The Hedgehog - The original is the best
Strider - Probably the best home port we got
Turrican - What can I say, it's Turrican!

Sega CD games in alphabetical order:
Lunar The Silver Star - Best RPG for the Sega CD, hands down
Sonic CD - Lots of fun and brings back some of the style that was present in Sonic 1 but missing from Sonic 2
Vay - A great Keranu-style RPG!

That about covers it. I certainly don't think the Genesis is "the bee's knees" of the 16 bit era (or ANY era), but every console I've ever played has at least one game I like.

I got a red-start button 6-button pad with my japanese Multi Mega. The seller only had japanese and North American stuff and the pad is MADE IN JAPAN, so I assume its japanese.

Its the same size as the U.S. pads.

That image looks like one of the 6-button knock-offs I've seen on eBay.

The one I'm thinking of is like the one in this LaserActive picture, only with Sega's name on it:

It's definitely smaller than the US version and isn't weak like the Majesco version.  You're right about the one I previously posted.  It probably is a knock-off.

I always hated the sound on the Genesis, as well as the controllers, but I owned one for a while.

My favorite games:

Herzog Zwei
Contra: Hard Corps
Kid Chameleon
Strider
Warsong
Romance of the Three Kingdoms II (I actually liked the sound better here than the SNES version)
Bonanza Bros
Flashback
Altered Beast
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Shining Force series
Strider
Golden Axe

One game "I always wanted to play but never got around to it" was TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist.

TMNT: Hyperstone Heist is pretty cool, but really easy.
