Hi-res Ys 7 video
« on: July 16, 2009, 07:46:50 PM »
I know alot of you hate the idea of Ys in 3D(though, I really don't consider any of the games to truly be in 3D, sicne they're still an overhead view), but this is the most 3D of them all.  This is actually the PSP version, there's a PC version in the works, & apparently more!  I'm hoping for a PS3 version personally.  Ys is still my favorite series EVA!

I guess we're all going to have to send flaming hate mail to Falcom since they mispelled Ys again!

It looks like it could be a cool game on its own, but it's very far from being a 'real' Ys game. Looks more like PSO/PSU with Grandia inspired visuals. Dogi's anime art is so messed up that he looks like Coach Oleander from Psychonauts. The art for the rest are decent enough except that it's pushing the popular androgenous J-style so that most characters look like feminine boys. I honestly don't know whether three of the characters shown are supposed to be male or female. Adol's art with that armor looks like Joan of Arc.

One thing I don't like is how every new Ys game looks lighter and lighter, kinda like what happened to the Shining series.

Lighter?  What do you mean?  Do you mean it's tone?  Apparently this game has a rating that's something like our "Mature" rating.  I think it'll be a fun game, though, I'm not as pumped about this one as I was with the last 3 games.  Those games gave me goosebumps!  Also, what's interesting is that this version is Ys Seven, while the other versions will be called either Ys 7 or VII(not sure which one).  I'm guessing that the PSP version might be different then the others. :-k

Sorta, mainly the art style and the tone it sets. Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force and Landstalker were dark and kinda gothic in a good way. Shining Force two wasn't so far off, but was filled with lots of bad gaudy color choices. Shining Force III and Shing the Holy Ark were that bright colorful plastic kinda cgi, even the fmv. Golden Sun was more of the same and those PS2 Shining games don't look anything like the early titles, gameplay aside.

Ys III is such a different style of game, but Ys IV PCE already took the series to the limit of 'lighter-ness' before the games began to look like they could be from any number of other series. Eternal/Complete managed to balance the darker style with modern art, even though I'm still not happy with the appearance of that Adol.

I still like the style ys Seven uses (I loved Grandia) and it looks nice, but the art style is the only thing left to connect new games to the older ones since 2D rammin' gameplay is long gone.

I personally didn't see the androgenous J-style much. DEF not at the levels Squenix have taken it.

I'm no modern RPG expert, but I don't think that anything is as bad as Square's games. :P At the very least, Adol looks more like a woman than a man to me.
