Do you hate challenging games
« on: October 14, 2009, 07:00:40 PM »
So.  I got Demon's Souls for ps3.  hooooo man.

After my boner subsided from HDMI + big tv, I actually played the game.

It's hard as agkfd;kljf;df******** bleeeeeep*********

But, its a great game!  Reminds me of something that would happen if Astyanax were modernizd.

I popped around youtube and some other places and there are too many damn people bitching and moaning that the game was too hard, and whining like 5 year olds.  "I DIE ALL THE TIME WHY DO I DIE WHAT IS THIS"

Am I missing something?!   Aren't games supposed to be moderately challenging so you get your full 60$ worth out of them?

or are they supposed to all be 5 hour walks in the park with shiney pictures and alot of achievements to show off.

I like legitimately challenging games, but I'm not a fan of games that are only hard because they're dirty cheap (like Night Creatures, which I actually enjoy despite of its cheapness).

*edit*

Like a fool, I mistakenly voted 'yes' when I meant to vote 'no'.

If it is still fun while being stupid hard, then yeah, really hard is really cool. I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is f*cking great, btw.

I'm lame so I like easy games. I don't have the time for frustration.

Feeling of actually beating something super challenging game is great.  I still get a buzz when I recall beating the likes of Castlevania I, Golgo 13, Megaman 1, Ninja Gaiden 1, Last Battle...  and these were pre-internet walkthrough/faq guides, which makes beating them even more special.

Actually, this made me go google "challenging NES games"
http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/2161/

Some of these games were legitimately brutal (G&G), but Karate Kid?  I recall regretting buying that game cause I beat it over a weekend.

If the game has a good story/fun to play, I don't mind a challenge. Those YouTube people should quit crying and get back to playing. Guess they aren't as good as they thought they were.

If I'm going to spend $60 on a game, I want my money's worth, so 10 hours of gameplay doesn't cut it.

sometimes I agree with the 60$ needs more than 10 hrs thing, but then I look at it like this, Contra and stuff on NES can be beat in <1hr, so I can't complain about a new game at retail being ONLY 10 hours long.  Though I'd much rather them be 30+

lol @ Karate Kid.   Everyone that sucks at that game confuses me.   Its such an easy game!

I'm just a little peeved that the new games are back to $60, when they were $50 back in the 90s and for a good chunk of this decade. I just gotta wait longer for the price to drop down. Back in the NES days, they justified a $60 price because of the computer chips in each cart and packaging.

30-40 hours is probably the sweet spot for gaming. If it's over 40+, it damn well better have a good story/gameplay.

The cost of manufacturing a disc and case is peanuts compared to the design, programming, etc. Today's games take a lot more time and resources to make than games of the NES era did. I'm not saying that makes 'em better games, just that it takes a lot more time and effort (all around) to make the finished product.

Also, $60 in 1988 money is quite a bit more than $60 in 2009 money. And let's not forget that $80 N64 games were on store shelves a decade ago.

I guess my answer depends on the level of difficulty when you say challenging.  I absolutely love a game that can't be beaten easily however the difficulty level shouldn't be to the point where you want to throw your controller through the tv screen.
All is well. :)

I like challenging games.  I do not like hard games.  What s the difference?  Hard games are hard just for the sake of being hard.  I lose interest quickly and they are usually the epitome of sloppy design.  However challenging games make me want to keep trying because you know it can be done, you just have to figure it out.  I have beaten plenty of challenging games like "Daimakaimura", Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 and the like.  Those games become easy for me.  However I do not like hard games like Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox.  I also usually do not appreciate games where boss characters take over 5 minutes to defeat even if you are doing everything perfectly.  I abhor long boss battles.  They don't need to be snappy-quick, but damn, don't make them drone on and on and on, coming back again and again (usually with new attacks) after their life bar is drained.

Lol Joe, that reminds me of the long as hell heavenly sword final boss battle where its so boring you want to just quit .  I think that battle takes longer than the rest of the game
