Joe's answer is a good one- there is a big difference between challenging games and hard games- however there are some hard games that are eleveated when all or most of the other elements of the game are above average- like R-Type- and Tatsujin.  Then there's a piece of garbage like Turrican- which is insanely hard- and every other element of the game is total crap.

Turrican should be blasted down before China Warrior

that game IS awful.  Theres like no fun qualities to it at all.

Super Monkey Ball 1 on the Gamecube.  Can't get enough of it.  I always walk through it on the most difficult setting.

Yes I did.  A jump button?  Bosses?  Trying to control the game with that insipid wand?  Ug.  Just awful.

One of my proudest video game victories in the past 5 years was finishing the Super Ultimate Master Extra Whatever-They're-Called stages on SMB Deluxe for the XBOX. I was buried in that game for like 2 months.

And then I saw videos of the really good players....

I don't care much for the Xbox edition.  The controls are a bit broken and feature a rather prominent "dead spot" at the center of the control.

Be sure to watch my Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 exploits (as recorded with a real Gamecube)

I'm pretty much a masochist, because I'll play games that I know are damn near impossible to beat: Athena (NES), Super Pitfall (NES), etc. etc.

Of course, I'm not always in the mood for ultra-masochism. Sometimes I just want something nice and easy, like Sinistron (ha! I still choke in Sinistron).

I try to complete RPG's to 100% so easy games are fun to blow off steam.

RPGs don't really require skill, only patience.
