Phantasy Star III
« on: October 19, 2009, 03:24:43 PM »
I think that this is one of the best Phantasy Star games, and it's also one of the most innovative adventure games of all time. The game spans 3 generations, and the character you play in the next generation depends on who you marry in the previous generation. That's cool, I thought that was great. I don't think I've seen any other games that have a feature like that. The characters are really awesome too. My favorite character in the game is Mieu. Somebody in an extra on the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP (I don't really know if this person actually worked on the game or not though) said that Mieu was his favorite character in the game as well. :D Her, Rhys and Rolf are 3 of my all-time favorite Sega characters, not just my favorite Phantasy Star characters.

Dragon's Lair appreciation. Again.

Dragon Quest V did the mutli generational thing a few years earlier ;)   I to like PS III, which seems like a minority.

I enjoy ALL Phantasy Star games.  All the real ones, anyway.  The Online and Text Adventures do not count and have absolutely no right whatsoever to exist.  I like part 3 the least, but I still enjoyed it.  It's just that the artwork was really ugly on some of the enemies and they barely animated.  Still, the story is nice and it does take place in the real Phantasy Star timeline.  Part 4 even references it.

I really liked the robot chick wandering the desert waiting for her master to return.  She kept doing this for what, 50 years?  I can't remember.  But it was sad.

For some reason people seem to like III the least, but I loved it back in the day. When I played IV, which is very lavish a cool, I found myself still liking III better.

I never finished II though.

PS3 was pretty cool -- for sure innovative.  But it definitely didn't "fit in" so well with the rest of the series.  It really is more of a side-quest in the Phantasy Star cannon, much like PS Gaiden for the gamegear.

PS2 was definitely the best one IMO.  Storyline, characters, all tops.  And the challenge level of this one is definitely a case of "Man, they don't make 'em like they used to", even considering the full-on walkthrough that came with the game.  I know a guy who destroyed his Genesis because he got so frustrated with the game (he never knew that a hint guide existed).

PS1 was awesome as well, definitely the best 8-bit JRPG IMO.

PS4's polish-level & production level was top-notch, but... just too damn easy!

And you know, I'm pretty damn sure they'd f*ck it up if they try to bring it back.  I'd rather let the PS series just go out with a bang.  I'd love to get Playstation 2 remakes (parts 1 & 2) in English, but fat chance...

PSIII doesn't get the credit it deserves as a stand alone game. People love to trash it and drive home their opinion that it doesn't even compare to the other "real" Phantasy Star games. As though they're afraid that if they didn't warn people, they'd be left to their own impressions and might mistakenly appreciate it or not find it to be the worst in the series.

Just the same, PSII is hugely overrated as an actual game and has aged the worst of the three Genesis Phantasy Stars.

Phantasy Star IV
seems overrated to me for some aspects and under appreciated for others, but in the end is a great well rounded game.

PS4's polish-level

when I read this, I immediately thought Polish as in Poland, and cracked up in class.

I imagine them battling to Polka, etc.

Pierogies and Accordians were involved.

>_<

anyway, I think PStar 3 had some awesome music.  The town music right when you start is one of the most soothing tunes ever.

Its my top pick for Phantasy Stars even..  More so than 2!

I borrowed a friend's Genesis in 93 and finally got one in 96 for $15 off some kid  . I only got to play PS 3 rented for 3 days in 93, and I borrowed PS 4 from a friend when I owned my Genesis in 96. I completed PS 4 on the Genesis at least 2 times and I now own it on the Genesis Collections for the PS2 system.

I just now started to play PS 2 and PS 3 on the collection disk the past 3 years. I kinda pick them up and drop playing them. It is really hard to keep playing on, even knowing that they are good games. I find it difficult to go back and play older RPGs at times, but I am finally getting better about it. I will buckle down and play them the next time around. I need to just stick to one game and not go from game, to game, to game etc...

The long dungeons can get a little ughhh in PS 2 and 3. In a way it is awesome as you get a good challenge and a sense of accomplishment when beating them. I will definitely buy the actual copies of all 3 for the Genesis in a little while. I should get the hint book or some strategy guide for PS 2 if I can. PS 3 so far does seem to be my least favorite. Man, did I enjoy PS 4 a lot though, and still do.

But the Turbo is 8-bit and therefore weak.  It can only hang with the SMS and NES since they are 8-bit as well.  It's in the bible.

Anyway, I liked Phantasy Star 2, but I do feel that it is a bit overrated.  There isn't a lot of story going on, it's mostly just grinding.
