Video gaming as a kid and dealing with religious parents....
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:53:33 AM »
When you were a kid, did you ever have trouble with such an issue, stuff like they take a game away from you from what they saw in it or such?

Me being from a church going family, my selection of games was really repressed back then. I got a assload of stories.

- Back in 5th grade, I borrowed a copy of Simon's Quest from a friend and they held it hostage just because they saw Dracula on the cover, holy water and the cloaked figure that takes you across the river, which for the record, he ended up not getting it back.

- My mom made me return Double Dragon II to the video rental place..

- My dad threatened to ground me after going to the arcade after seeing me play Samurai Shodown. He would overreact at the slightest drop of blood. Hell he was so extreme with the issue about blood in games, that he once said that if he saw I rented a game that had blood, he would actually smash the cartridge into pieces and he would pay the video store for it! Similar thing happened if he caught me playing Tekken 2 he would ban me from going to the arcade for a month.

- Day after I got my SuperNES, I started to rent Contra III and Axelay....dad had the nerve to raise his voice at me in front of the whole store because he saw Red Falcon and the Sand Monster boss because he thought they were demons

- One Saturday morning, I taped the first episode of the Darkstalkers cartoon that came on during the mid 90's, the biggest disadvantage was that only place I could tape stuff was in my parents' room. As I was taping it, mom got really upset when Pyron came on the screen

that prolly explains why I wasn't so much into playing Mortal Kombat..

Even though my mom was a teacher at Catholic sunday school, I didn't get any grief over a game's content.  The only things I remember are:

-My mom got really mad at me playing Choplifter when I got my Sega Master System because the music in the first level would drone on and on and on (I couldn't beat the level).  Funny thing is that during the 16-bit era she would request me to make tapes full of music from the Genesis and TG-16 so she could listen to it in her car as she drove to work.  Recently she asked for MP3 CDs of the same stuff.

-She took away my SMS when I started getting bad grades in school.  The SMS came in an awesome white box with styrofoam and a handle.  I swapped out the SMS with various objects that had similar weight and kept the SMS under the bed.

-She made me stop playing Dark Castle because the game was too crappy.

I went to church pretty regularly as a kid, but my mother is a very liberal and practical minded person. I did what I wanted to do and everything turned out fine. Honestly, looking at some of the freaks on Facebook that I (supposedly) went to high school with, I guess I'm doing pretty damned good.

I love fighting games in general, but I never liked Mortal Kombat because it was a shit fighting game who's only draw was a non-interative murder at the end of a fight, and only if you knew an abstract nonsense code. The most violent games I own in Samurai Showdown IV and Vampire Savior...which are pretty violent, but other than that, almost nothing I own even has blood in it. I'm one of the tiny percentage of humans that is actually turned off by violence, torture, murder, etc. I'm more into cute things and good food and outer space and sports cars and f*cking.

Not so much stories here, just my dad sometimes came in my room when I had one of my big angry outbursts (mostly during the era of Street Fighter II).
He then usually hold a long speech of how those apathetic video games will blunt me or so.

Sometimes also my game music was set too loud.

appart of that, I was quite free in handling evil video games, as long i came up with the finance for 'em by myself.

Ah yes, the angry outbursts at games.  I find that when someone comes into the room and attempts to suggest how I deal with it (like shutting off the game or breathing deeply, whatever) that is just makes me more angry.  When someone gets angry at a game, they are usually angry at themselves for not being able to beat whatever challenge is facing them, so people trying to give you advice on how to handle yourself at this point only adds insult to injury.

I just told my parents I played video games because of the rich content of Christian games.  I told them my favorite was called Gods.

I just hid my Splaterhouse HuCard under that.  ;-)

Gods can't be a christian game, since there is only one GOD described. your parents should have known that and instantly moved away the whole collection of evil games from you.

Actually, if you have a Bible laying around read Genesis 1:26

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish...."

Interesting isn't it.  Us and Our,  Meaning their is more than one god.  Of course most "Christians" I know have never actually read the bible and believe it says "Man was created in gods image." Because that is what they have been told since they were in Sunday school.

BAM!  Gods baby!!  :)

Genesis 3:22 also says, And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and..."

I do not come from a religious family, thus I didn't have any sort of thing along these lines happen to me when I was a kid. I guess I had it easy growing up.... or something.

Only "story" I can recall at all is my dad actually playing Space Harrier a few times. I believe it's the only time in his life he's ever played a video game.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Anyone remember this game?

My mom wasn't very happy when she saw the second boss, because it looked similar to the beast riding Harlot which I believed was mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

Ugh there was my disadvantage...having the NES hooked up in a room where the whole family had access.
